Snowcat skiing was pioneered 30 years ago by Selkirk Wilderness Skiing in the West Kootenay Valley of British Columbia. Catering to small groups on a weekly basis Selkirk Wilderness offers an appealng alternative to both helicopter and lift-serviced skiing. Each week 24 guests are taken by snowcat to a private mountain lodge 2500 feet above the valley floor. This spacious hideaway offers panoramic views of the Selkirk and Purcell Mountains and all the luxuries of home. Each day skiers are transported in comfort to ski endless fields of deep, light, untouched snow. Because the snowcat is never grounded by stormy weather they can expect to ski 12,000 to 18,000 vertical feet of powder every day of their holiday. Each ski group of 12 have their own snowcat and 2 or 3 guides, so only the group decides how fast or slow they want to go.
