Spotted Horse Ranch Description:
A full service guest ranch nestled along the Hoback River south of Jackson Hole, Wyoming and Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks; activities include horseback riding, fishing, hunting, and more.

Additional Information:
Welcome to the Spotted Horse Ranch just south of Jackson Hole, Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. Come explore the many opportunities our ranch offers to experience a land that remains much the same as when explorer John Colter first set his eyes on it in 1807.

Whatever your dream of the West, it’s real here at the Spotted Horse Ranch. The valley cradling the Hoback River has been cultivated by working ranchers for generations. As times changed, the simple log homes and rustic barns gave way to guest ranches for the "dudes" who came up from the cities. Fresh air, unspoiled natural surroundings, and the feeling that time is suspended were in demand then and still in ample supply.

The experience of ranch life at the Spotted Horse is a dramatic departure from the way most people spend their day. The pace is leisurely, with hearty home-cooked meals served in the lodge dining room. Explore the wilderness surrounding the Ranch through a float trip, horseback ride, overnight trip or a hike. The quaint saloon hasn’t changed much in 40 years and is located in the main lodge along with a pool table and great room. Indoors or out, the Spotted Horse is an idyllic island of peace and quiet in a busy world.

After the cookout, the grill cools down and the campfire heats up. Some guest compare stories about their stay as others amble back across the river, eyeing the hot tub and thinking of a late night soak. Some chat with the Ranch hands, comfortable with everything they have experienced. Although their stay is nearly over, the memories are just beginning. The Spotted Horse Ranch is what the West is all about. This guest ranch is an outpost of unpretentious comfort in the center of spectacular mountain country.

Jackson Hole attracts visitors from around the world with legendary skiing and winter adventure andhundreds of thousands of acres of spectacular back country to discover in all seasons. The Town of Jackson hosts galleries, shops, museums, and restaurants that offer a wide variety of experiences – from barbecue to haute cuisine, and from western art to contemporary, it’s alive in Jackson. Two national parks, Grand Teton and Yellowstone, draw several million people a year to take in the amazing array of geographic features, geysers, and wildlife.

ACCOMMODATIONS:
The atmosphere at the Spotted Horse Ranch is relaxed and casual. Our individual cabins are of log construction with the modern conveniences of home. Spacious comfortable rooms with private baths are all attractively furnished in a decor benefiting the true spirit of the West.

The main lodge includes a dining room overlooking the Hoback River, a spacious livingroom with a beautiful rock fireplace and lounge. Other main features include a sauna, whirlpool, video library, and laundry facility.

Activities:
The runoff from nearly 400 inches of snow each winter provides Jackson Hole with some of the best streams and rivers for spawning and growing trout. Snake River Fine-Spotted Cutthroat, Rainbow, and Brown Trout thrive in the cool waters. Vigorous and hungry, they offer virtually every level of flycaster a satisfying experience. One of our concessions to progress is a new spring-fed pond with its very own Cutthroat population to help anglers build confidence and improve casting skills. From there you can work your way to fishing the Hoback and Willow Creek here on the Ranch. Or, take a guided fishing trip on the Snake or Green River. "The Trout School" here at the Ranch is a must for beginners and intermediates. Trail Rides The Spotted Horse Ranch is home for the famous Appaloosa Horse. Bred originally by the Nez Perce Indians, the Apaloosa was found to show incredible endurance and stamina in Rocky Mountain terrain. Come ride with us and experience the thousands of acres of scenic forest lands surrounding the ranch. We ride under permit from the Forest Service. Endless trails will take you through majestic mountains, valleys of wildflowers, and along river banks accessible only by horseback. Excellent guides can help you in selecting the perfect horse for your ability. Don't forget your camera! Trout Fishing If you like to fish, you couldn't pick a finer location than the Spotted Horse Ranch. Fish along the banks of the Hoback, only steps away from your cabin, also practice in our trout pond or take a float trip down the Snake, Hoback, Salt, New Fork or Green River for a full day's adventure. Whether you are a novice or an expert, our experienced guides can help you bring in the big one. The Trout School is held every Wednesday morning for learning or improving fly casting skills. Private lessons can be arranged. We practice catch and release. Pack Trips For Spotted Horse Ranch guests wanting to get a taste of the wilderness surrounding the ranch, overnight pack trips are available. All equipment, guides and horses are provided. Hunting In the fall, the Spotted Horse ranch becomes your base for hunting trips into the Bridger-Teton National forest. Two wilderness hunting camps are available for hunters looking for elk, deer and moose (Wyoming Outfitter: Big Game Tony Royal, Booking License #012). Please call for permit information. Other Ranch Activities We have a breakfast and evening cookout each week and reccommend that you stay for a full week to enjoy both. Our evening cookout on Thursday is accompanied in song by a local music talent just like in the days of old when voices were lifted in song around the campfire. Sunday features our breakfast cookout; nothing smells or tastes better than pancakes served with bacon and eggs cooked over an open fire. Be prepared to eat a hearty meal. Wednesday is Scenic Float trip day on the Snake River. You can enjoy a quiet scenic float down the Snake River, or a whitewater trip can be arranged for the more wild adventurer. Volleyball, ping-pong, square dancing and horseshoes are available as well. Nearby Attractions Both Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks are less than an hour away from the ranch. The town of Jackson offers an array of activities ranging from stagecoach rides and rodeos to live theater and night spots. for the shopper, Jackson hosts over 30 galleries, historical museums, and a variety of specialty shops. Jackson has two exquisite golf courses with Teton views, so don't forget your golf clubs. Here is some information to help you choose the right hunt, hunt areas, and applications. We hunt the following areas for these species: Elk: Area 84, Deer: Region H, Area 152, Moose: Area 10, Sheep: Area 7, Black Bear: Area 17, Antelope: Areas 87,88,89, and 90, and Mountain Lion: Area 2. Applications for licenses are available from: Wyoming Game and Fish Department, 5400 Bishop Blvd. Cheyenne, Wy. 82006-0001. The Wyoming Game and Fish Department Web site is: www.gf.state.wy.us and applications, regulations, etc. may be downloaded there. The General Hunting and Fishing information hotline is (307) 777-4600. You may wish also to look at the Wyoming Outfitters and Guides Association website at: www.wyoga.org. There is much information and some good links as well. Elk, Deer, and Moose Hunts: The Spotted Horse Ranch has been Outfitting hunters since 1961. We have two camps, as well as ten guest cabins at the ranch. We currently own more than forty horses, so we will be sure to have one to suit your style. Elk, Deer, and Moose hunts take place from our Hunter Creek Camp, located sixteen miles into the backcountry. This camp is the larger of the two, in the heart of 152,000 acres of the Bridger-Teton National Forest. Such amenities as a heated shower tent, large cook and dining tent, and running water are in place during the summer season as well as the fall hunting season. Accommodations are canvas wall tents, 10’X12’, each equipped with wood stove for heat, cots, pads, nightstands, and lights. Hunters sleep two to a tent. Two private restroom facilities are available. Dining is in our spacious cook tent, and meals are served family style. Soda pop, Water, juice and beer are provided to each hunter. We are happy to pack any other beverages to camp for you. While hearty food is the rule, special diets can be attended to as well. A seven day hunt is structured as follows: On arrival at the Spotted Horse Ranch, you will have all the amenities of the Ranch available for you use, including lodging in one of our guest cabins, hot-tub, sauna, and all meals. We have a 200-yard rifle range on the ranch, or we can transport you to a 100-yard range just south of Jackson to check your rifle. To ensure that our horses stay fresh and healthy, we rotate each day to a different horse. Two horses and a saddle will be selected for you for the following days ride into Hunter Creek Camp. Scabbards and saddlebags are provided as well. On day two, we will hunt our way into camp, two hunters to one guide. Wyoming State Law allows up to six hunters to one guide in our area, but we have found that two to one gives not only a better quality hunt, but increases our success ratio as well. Reaching camp on the second night, Dinner will be served and plans formulated for the next morning's hunt. You will have a total of six nights in Hunter Creek Camp, riding/hunting, out on day seven to return to the ranch. All meat and trophies are cared for by experienced packers, and transported to the ranch to our walk-in meat cooler. Meat processing and taxidermy are both available in Jackson. The country we hunt is steep and rugged, and much hunting will be done on foot as well as horseback; please consider the physical nature of such a hunt. Antelope Hunts: Antelope Hunting is a day hunt from the Ranch. Transportation by vehicle and all meals are provided. A typical antelope hunt would be: Breakfast at the Ranch at 5:30, depart for hunting areas by six A.M. A sack lunch is provided. We usually return to the ranch by seven P.M. for dinner. Suggested Items: Here is an idea of what to bring for a hunt, and some guidelines to make your packing easier. All gear and supplies are transported on packhorses, which somewhat limits the size and weight of luggage or duffle bags. It is better to have several small bags than one large one. For the least disturbance to your gear, bags should be no larger than 14"X14"X22", and weigh no more than 40 pounds. There is a limit of two such bags per hunter, not including a sleeping bag. Should larger bags be provided, we must many times rearrange and redistribute the clothing and gear to obtain proper size and balance suitable for horse packing. Fragile or sensitive items such as video cameras, glass containers, etc. require special attention. We pride ourselves in our ability to transport almost anything by horse packing, and are always happy to do so; you can help by providing reasonable loads to be packed safely. Clothing: 1 pair of cotton socks for each day 1 pair of wool socks for each day Long underwear tops and bottoms Jeans/ t-shirts Long-sleeve shirts, both heavy and light weight Warm, quiet coat *we suggest wool Warm, quiet, heavy pants *we suggest wool Warm hunting hat or baseball cap with earflaps Light, quiet raingear Gloves, 1 pair light and 1 pair heavy 1 pair of comfortable insulated boots and 1 pair of comfortable camp shoes/boots to change into 1 fluorescent orange garment to be worn visibly. Hat, coat, or vest. Notice the suggestion of quiet clothing: Many new materials on the market claim to be windproof, waterproof, and warm. Sadly, much of the materials used in these items are noisy, and our game animals hear extremely well. Please keep this in mind when purchasing or selecting clothing and raingear for your hunt. Other Items: Scoped rifle and ammo Binoculars Camera Pocketknife or belt knife Leatherman tool or similar pocket tool for emergency repairs Small flashlight to be carried on your person while afield Toiletries, medication Warm sleeping bag Small travel alarm clock Water bottle Hunting license with conservation stamp must be carried on your person at all times Weather: We cannot always determine what the weather will be like in Wyoming. Snow, rain, or sleet may occur at anytime, though it may also be quite balmy in September and October. You can expect the temperatures to be between 10-30 degrees in the mornings and between 20-80 degrees in the afternoons. Layering your clothing is the most effective way to stay comfortable. Nights can be on the cool side, but all of our tents are equipped with woodstove heaters; they also do a good job of drying out wet gear. In the wintertime, Spotted Horse Ranch will be operating as a Bed & Breakfast. Come to the Spotted Horse Ranch and enjoy our cozy two bedroom log cabins. After aday of activities you can soak in our jacuzzi, warm up in our sauna, both located on the banks of the Hoback River, or relax and enjoy a cocktail or hot chocolate in our Main Lodge. The Lodge features a dining room overlooking the river, a billiard table, a fireplace, and a lounge area. Soda and beer are available and feel free to bring your own wine or liquor. We can help you with your plans to enjoy the nearby winter attractions like: snowmobiling snowshoeing (rentals available) skiing(cross-country or downhill) dogsledding sleigh rides on the Elk Refuge shopping in the Town of Jackson visiting local museums dinner sleigh rides
