Flat Creek Jackson Hole Guest Ranch Description:
Wilderness Guest Ranch in Jackson Hole, Wyoming features hiking, fishing, and fine cuisine in a secluded, mountain retreat. wilderness hideaway in Jackson Hole. Built by a countess and a cowboy in the 1920s. Elegantly appointed, lovingly restored, listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Additional Information:
Hike the mountains. Ride the wilderness. Fish a legendary trout stream. Dine outrageously. A special spot for couples, families, fly fishing parties, hiking clubs, small executive retreats, once-in-a-lifetime gatherings.

The Lodge
The log cabin Lodge is the heart of social life. Ranch gourmet cooking -- grilled meat and fish, home-baked bread and desserts, a healthy infusion of creative salads and crisp vegetables -- originates in the main kitchen every day. While awaiting meals, guests lounge on the front porch overlooking our lake, where fish rise at the hatch and moose sometimes loll. The living room, anchored on one end by a stone fireplace and on the other by Cissy's own piano, is an intimate after-dinner venue. Measuring 18 x 30 feet, the living room can be rearranged for meetings or recitals.

Cissy Cabin
The Countess of Flat Creek had this double-sized cabin built for herself in the 1920s. Its big living room has space to sprawl, and the bedroom is outfitted with a queen-sized bed. The bathroom's antique claw-foot tub has a view onto pristine woodlands. Offering both a wood-burning stove and propane gas heater for chill mornings, the Cissy Cabin has a porch looking out at the lake. A futon in the living room converts into a double bed, and two stuffed chairs convert into single beds.

Josephine Cabin
This cabin's front porch has a long view of the lake, while a second porch off the bedroom perches on the north bank of Flat Creek. A queen-sized brass bed, compact bath with antique claw-foot tub, plus generous living room centered on a wood-burning stove are features. A futon-type couch can be made up into a single bed. The cabin is named for the late Josephine Patterson Albright, who preserved the ranch by placing it under a conservation easement after she inherited it from her aunt Cissy.

Cal Cabin
This cozy log cabin is the first one you'll see when you arrive at Flat Creek Ranch. Once the cabin of the horse-rustling wrangler who homesteaded the ranch, Cal's place offers a very private porch high on the creek bank with spectacular sunset views. It's the most likely place to spot evening deer crossings. The cabin includes a bedroom with queen-sized bed, bathroom featuring claw-foot tub, and living room snuggled around a wood-burning stove. Its living room futon can accommodate children or an additional adult.

Judge's Cabin
The porch of this bright, spacious cabin presents a bird's-eye view of eagles or osprey that often swoop the creek to snatch up fish. Or you can lean back in the bathroom's antique tub and contemplate the creek view from wide windows. This cabin -- named for a judge from California who loves to fish at the ranch -- has two double beds in the bedroom and a convertible couch available to sleep another person in the living room. A wood-burning stove completes the picture.

Farney Cabin Farney Cabin
This comfy cabin has a front porch with overview of the ranch, as well as a second, very private deck off the bedroom with creek and sunset vistas. It includes a queen-sized bed in the bedroom and a wood-burning stove in the living room. An added feature is a tiled shower that can accommodate a wheel chair. The cabin was named after Cissy's legendary caretaker Farney Cole, whose claim to fame was fighting his way out of an encounter with an unfriendly bear in 1944, using only a big stick.

Wash House
If an antique bathtub with a hand-held shower spray in your own cabin just isn't your cup of tea, we recommend a shower in our separate wash house. As in the old days, it's divided into one side for women and the other for men, with a shower stall, sink and toilet in each side.

Wilderness Camp
In a mountain meadow about four miles east of our ranch, our outfitter maintains a cluster of comfortable wall tents with cots and sleeping bags, plus a cook tent and latrine. Our guests stay at the wilderness camp during pack trips and overnight hikes.

Activities:
Fishing "Fishing for fat trout is a favorite pastime at the ranch," wrote Jackson Hole Magazine in a 2002 cover story on our ranch. We own a mile-and-a-half stretch of upper Flat Creek's challenging waters and the 45-acre Flat Creek Lake. And you'll have access to another five miles of fast riffles and deep pools on public land just west of our ranch. Our rule is: Fly fishing only, catch-and-release. Our favorite spot on the ranch is the "Curt Gowdy hole," a deep and placid bend in Flat Creek where wily cutthroats and scrappy brook trout congregate. Some of our guests prefer stalking the big cutthroats that hide in the clear, deep channel that winds through the lake. Luckily for dry fly purists, Flat Creek is blessed with prolific hatches of May flies, Caddis flies and a host of other fish favorites. We can lend you fly rods, reels, nets and waders; we also provide a free fly-fishing clinic for those who want to learn or brush up on fishing techniques. Hiking The Flat Creek Ranch (elevation 7,400 feet) is surrounded on all sides by the Bridger-Teton National Forest and the Gros Ventre Wilderness Area. Any path you choose to hike -- rigorous climb or easy amble -- will cross elk trails and meadows brilliant with wildflowers. You can hike the Teton Overlook trail that climbs to a panoramic view of Grand Teton National Park, stretching from the base of the Grand Teton to Jackson Lake. Or, if you're in the mood for a bigger challenge, you can pursue the old Poachers' Trail up to the Nose of the Sleeping Indian Mountain (elevation --11,000 feet). Almost as challenging is the shorter South Ridge trail leading up toward Table Mountain. Many gentler trails also crisscross our ranch and the surrounding terrain. Rides and Pack Trips The backcountry surrounding our ranch has been designated by the U.S. Congress as the Gros Ventre National Wilderness Area. Horseback riding is inherently risky in the wilderness, which is made up of 287,000 acres of pristine pine forests, mountains and steep valleys. But if you are up for it, our outfitter is ready to take you on memorable trail rides that last from mid-morning to mid-afternoon. Our guests often ride on the little-used Forest Service trail past Flat Creek Lake, through pristine forest and verdant meadow, and on to the Wilderness Camp for lunch. The company, High Country Outfitters, also offers pack trips into seldom-visited terrain deeper in the wilderness area. Naturalist Programs In cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service, we expect to host weekly visits by a Forest Service naturalist, who will lead a short hike and fill you in on the natural wonders around us -- from identifying animal tracks to describing the survival techniques of sagebrush and mating habits of moose. Water Sports Some intrepid souls dare to swim in the chilly waters of Flat Creek Lake. For others, we provide a canoe, a drift boat and a rowboat. Sauna The sauna house is a log cabin that extends out over Flat Creek. Let us crank up the wood stove that we imported from Finland. Throw some water on the rocks, and when you're parboiled, step outside for an icy shower -- or if you are really brave, dip into the creek. Wildlife Sit on your porch and watch a longtime resident pair of bald eagles soar over Flat Creek Lake in search of fish. Hear the piercing cry of ospreys. Watch for mink, moose, deer and an occasional big horn sheep. There could be black bears around too. So before you go walking in the woods, ask us to loan you a can of pepper spray. Children's Activities Families are welcome at the ranch throughout our Spring and Summer Seasons. (Our brief Fall Season is adults-only.) Kids can learn to throw a lariat. Or go hiking. Or learn to recognize a moose track. They can play badminton, ping pong or horseshoes.
