BICYCLING Touring Salt Lake City by bicycle is an ideal way to see the sights. One popular ride is City Creek Canyon, where an every-other-day system closes the road to cars in summer months. Pony Express Trail and west desert of Salt Lake City are also popular. BIG COTTONWOOD CANYON & RESORTS This 15-mile long canyon, located along Big Cottonwood Canyon Road, at Wasatch Boulevard and 7000 South, offers downhill and cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, fishing, camping, hiking, picnicking and rock climbing. Skiing is available at Brighton and Solitude. (801) 524-5042. CATHOLIC CATHEDRAL OF MADELEINE This recently refurbished Roman Gothic styled cathedral is a masterpiece, complete with magnificent stained glass windows and other elaborate art work. Located at 331 East South Temple. (801) 328-8941. DELTA CENTER The home of the Utah Jazz Basketball Team. Also the main function center for music concerts. FAMILY HISTORY LIBRARY The largest genealogical research center in the world, located at 25 North West Temple, (801) 240-2331. GREAT SALT LAKE The Great Salt Lake has a saline content of 5% to 27%, nearly seven time saltier than any ocean. HANSEN PLANETARIUM One of the best known and most innovative planetariums in the world, it offers two exhibit floors and features a domed theater offering spectacular star shows, genuine moon rocks, and a gift shop and book store. Located at 15 South State Street, (801) 538-5322. HIKING AND BACKPACKING Red Butte Gardens and Arboretum, located east of Fort Douglas, offers a 13-acre botanical garden and four miles of mountain trails. (801) 581-5322. Brighton Lakes Trail, at the top of Big Cottonwood Canyon, ascends 2.5 miles to Lake Mary. Hardy hikers will want to continue upward over 10,200-foot Catherine Pass. HISTORIC SITES Capitol Hill, home of the Marmalade Historic District where many original pioneer homes are located, (801) 533-0858. Gardner Historic Village, 1095 West 7800 South. The Old Gardner Flour Mill was built in 1877 by Archibald Gardner. It has been restored and now houses Country Furniture and Archibald's Restaurant. Surrounding the mill are many historic homes renovated into quaint country shops. Phone (801) 566-8903. Wheeler Historic Farm, 6351 South 900 East, is a historic 1890's style farm. (801) 264-2212. HOGLE ZOO Displaying an extensive collection of animals, the zoo is located at 2600 East Sunnyside Avenue and is open daily. (801) 582-1631. KENNECOTT'S BINGHAM CANYON COPPER MINE An observation deck overlooks spectacular vistas of the world's largest man-made excavation, open April-October. LIBERTY PARK/TRACY AVIARY Located at 1300 South 589 East, this city park offers lots of room for relaxation. Tracy Aviary: America's only public bird park with more than 1,000 birds from around the world on display in 16 wooded acres of Liberty Park. The Free-flying Bird Show features dozens of trained birds performing in the open and is presented Wednesday-Sunday during the summer, weekends during the spring and fall. Special events include the Nature Fair, held the last weekend of August. (801) 596-5034. LITTLE COTTONWOOD CANYON & RESORTS Like its neighbor to the north, this canyon is a year-round outdoor haven. It is located on Little Cottonwood Canyon Road, Wasatch Boulevard and 9400 South. (801) 524-5042. MAURICE ABBRAVANEL CONCERTHALL Home of the Symphony Orchestra, this hall also hosts numerous concerts throughout the year. Acclaimed for its musical acoustics, it is located at 123 South West Temple, (801) 533-6407. MORMON TABERNACLE CHOIR Famous 320-voice choir offers public concerts in the Tabernacle on Historic Temple Square, Thursday evenings and Sunday mornings. Organ recitals and Tabernacle choir rehearsals are open to the public. (801) 240-2534. MUSEUMS University of Utah; the Utah Museum of Fine Art and the Utah Museum of Natural History, (801) 581-4303. Pioneer Memorial Museum, 300 N. Main, displays artifacts from the pioneers' journey, including Brigham Young's wagon, (801) 538-1050. Utah State History Museum/Utah State Historical Society, 300 Rio Grande Street, (801) 533-3500. Fort Douglas Military Museum, at Fort Douglas; hours vary; (801) 588-5188. The Children's Museum of Utah, 840 North 300 West, "hands-on" participatory museum featuring exhibits involving children in learning activities. (801) 328-3383. NATIONAL PARKS Eleven of our greatest national parks are within a day's drive of Salt Lake City. PIONEER TRAIL STATE PARK Near the mouth of Emigration Canyon, this is where Mormon pioneers entered the valley in 1847. "Old Desert Village," a living museum, depicts life in the valley from 1847-1869. Open Tuesday-Sunday, 11:00a.m.-5:00p.m. RIO GRANDE DEPOT The home of the Utah State Historical Society is this renovated railroad depot for the Denver-Rio Grande-Western. They have AN excellent bookstore and a library of historical photographs. SALT PALACE CONVENTION CENTER This three-building complex covers two city blocks and contains arena/exhibit halls, exhibit events and the Salt Lake Valley Convention and Visitor's Bureau. SALT LAKE ART CENTER Features works by contemporary regional and national artists as well as an annual holiday exhibit featuring a Nutcracker theme. (801) 328-4201. SKIING There are seven ski resorts within 45 miles of Salt Lake City. The powder snow of the Wasatch Range is the deepest--and most famous--in the world. Ski from Thanksgiving to May. ALPINE: Alta, Utah's oldest ski resort, has 8 chair lifts. Snowbird Ski & Summer Resort offers 7 lifts and the famous Snowbird Aerial Tram. Brighton Ski Bowl, 25 miles southeast of Salt Lake City, offers 5 chairlifts. Solitude Ski Resort boasts 1,000 acres and over 2,000 vertical feet of skiing surface and 7 chairlifts with high-speed quad. CROSS-COUNTRY: At the top of Big Cottonwood Canyon is Solitude Nordic Center offering classic and skating trails on 15 kilometers of groomed track. SNOWMOBILING: South Willow Canyon in the Stansbury Mountain Range, (801) 364-1581. TEMPLE SQUARE This 10-acre block is the center of the Mormon Church and Salt Lake City's most celebrated landmark. The granite Temple, built between 1853 and 1893, contains a domed Tabernacle, Assembly Hall and Seagull Monument, completely enclosed by a fifteen-foot wall. It houses a huge pipe organ and two visitor centers that offer extensive audio visual displays, and complimentary tours, daily. JOSEPH SMITH MEMORIAL BUILDING Formerly the Hotel Utah, this historic building houses LDS Church administrative offices, a chapel, two restaurants, a large screen theater and a Family Search Center. Legacy, a 53-minute film portraying the pioneers' courage and spirit, is shown Mon.-Sat. in the theater. It is located at South Temple and Main Streets, (801) 240-4400. THE BEEHIVE HOUSE Dating from 1854, this home was Brigham Young's official family residence and is now a National Historic Landmark. Open Monday-Saturday 9:30a.m. to 4:30p.m.; Sunday, 10:00a.m. to 1:00p.m. (801) 240-2671. TROLLEY SQUARE This nationally famous shopping and entertainment center is situated within 1908-era trolley barns. With tasteful old time flair, it is all indoors and features shops, restaurants, theaters, open market and art displays. UTAH STATE CAPITOL The Capitol was built in 1916 and overlooks all of Salt Lake City from its perch on Capitol Hill. The Corinthian style architecture was designed to resemble our nation's capitol. WILDLIFE WATCHING Shore birds, wading birds and waterfowl galore can be seen at the Great Salt Lake Shore, west of Salt Lake City. At Vernon, a large group of wintering bald eagles feed on the plentiful supply of blacktailed jackrabbits. The White Pine Lake viewing site is a short hike through the scenic Wasatch Mountains.
