Centuries before Steamboat Springs became the world-class resort it is today, the Ute Indians adopted the area as their summer home. Today it's common theory that though Steamboat locals endure the winter, most stay for the summer. Nestled along the banks of the Yampa River, in the midst of a wide, open valley on the western slope of the Continental Divide, Steamboat Springs appeals to all walks of life.
Steamboat Ski Area
One of the biggest ski mountains in North America is better then ever! 142 trails make Steamboat the 2nd largest mountain in Colorado with 3,668 ft. vertical and 2,939 acres of terrain.
Recreation on this public land is provided by a unique partnership between the Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation and the Routt National Forest.
Haymaker Golf Course
Haymaker, the newest public golf course to grace the Yampa Valley, is a bit of Scotland right here in the west. The rolling fairways, deep bunkers, meandering streams and surrounding native grasses give Haymaker a Scottish feel that makes it unique among mountain golf courses.
And that's not all that's different about Haymaker. The course sits within a 233 acre site. And there's no residential development which means the outside world seems to disappear once you're on the course.
The Yampa River
Steamboat Springs' Yampa River continues to attract fly fisherman from around the world. There are five miles of newly-designated catch and release water with the distinct absence of trout contaminated by the state-wide epidemic of Whirling Disease.
The Yampa River is also a haven for white water kayakers and canoeists. Boasting class-3 rapids, the Yampa River has become a favorite playground for local and visiting boaters alike. And during the calmer, low water season of the summer recreational tubers can have a relaxing float through town. |
