The inviting waters of numerous mineral springs, mild climate, abundant wild game and rivers teeming with fish, made the area a true paradise.
The town got its name when trappers, traveling through the area in the mid-1800s, found a spring that made a chugging noise which sounded to them like a steamboat. Fur trapping gave way to gold mining and eventually ranching and coal mining. Located in beautiful Northwest Colorado, Steamboat Springs is the county seat and the largest community in Routt County. Routt County encompasses 2,331 square miles or 1,491,840 acres of land. Over 735,000 acres (47%) is publicly owned, the majority of which is located in the Routt National Forest. The population of Steamboat Springs is at 10,000 as of July, 2000 and the county’s population as of 2000 is estimated at 20,000.
The winter season is best known for the alpine skiing or snowboarding in champagne powder™ through the trees at the Steamboat Ski Area on Mt. Werner. Cross country skiing, snowmobiling and sleigh rides are offered by many guest ranches with dinner rides being very popular. There is also indoor tennis, an indoor climbing gym, hot air balloon rides, snowshoeing, winter fly fishing, soaking in the hot mineral pools, ice skating and ice hockey to enjoy.
When the snow starts to melt, the rivers fill and boating enthusiasts abound. Kayaking, rafting and canoeing on the Yampa River through meandering class II and III rapids is very popular during the spring months. Other rivers in the region include the Elk, Eagle, Green and Colorado. Steamboat also has some of the best road and mountain biking opportunities around. Some other non-winter activities include hiking, camping in the National Forest, world class fishing and the local outfitters provide everything you need to start your adventure.
Whatever your dream, Steamboat Springs is sure to provide you with incredible memories to last a lifetime.
Steamboat is actually a complete mountain range consisting of Mount Werner, Sunshine Peak, Storm Peak, Thunderhead Peak and Christie Peak, which comprise 2,939 acres of permitted terrain that offers a diversity of trails for all levels of ability. Gladed areas of Sunshine and Storm Peaks are Steamboat's particular claim to fame, with "champagne powder" in the trees for the most avid powder hounds.
The Steamboat Ski Area is located in Medicine Bow/Routt National Forest. Recreation on this public land is provided by a unique partnership between the Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation and the Medicine Bow/Routt National Forest. The Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation is committed to the wise use of their natural resources, as well as the preservation and enhancement of the Medicine Bow/Routt National Forest. Their efforts in this area include the improvements of wildlife habitat, erosion control, water conservation and recycling of waste products.
Steamboat Ski & Resort is going through expansions which will eventually turn the existing skiable acres to 3,470 skiable acres. The Morningside Park Expansion opened 179 acres of new terrain at Steamboat in 1996/97, next is the four-phase Pioneer Ridge expansion, a 770-acre area of intermediate and advanced terrain to the north of the existing ski area. Phase I, for the 1997/98 season, brought 250 acres of terrain. Steamboat also built a high-speed quad chair lift for 1997/98 from the lower mountain to the Thunderhead facility at the top of the Silver Bullet gondola.
Additional improvements included expanded snowmaking and the creation of new-gladed terrain making Steamboat one of the biggest ski mountains in North America and the 2nd largest mountain in Colorado!
