Located between Ridgway and Montrose. Newest Colorado State Park - offering excellent recreation and activities facilities around the 1,000 acre lake. San Juan Hut System
Ski route consists of five backcountry ski huts between Telluride, Ridgway and Ouray - connected by trails on the north side of the Mount Sneffels Range. These rustic huts can be individually accessed for a night in the snowbound backcountry, or advanced skiers can travel hut-to-hut. Mountain bike route is 206 miles from Telluride, Colorado to Moab, Utah on dirt roads. Huts are 35 miles apart and are fully equipped.

Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad
This is a very memorable way to spend a day! The Denver & Rio Grande Railway began hauling passengers and freight between Silverton and Durango in 1882. The route winds through scenic valley and spectacular canyons surrounded by remote wilderness. Coal-fired steam-powered locomotives and rolling stock indigenous to the historical Train run year round. Trains make limited runs out of Durango from the end of October through early May.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park
No other canyon in North America combines the narrow opening, sheer walls, and startling depths of the Black Canyon. Park entrance on south rim is about 12 miles east of Montrose (37 miles from Ridgway). The South Rim Drive is 7 miles long with 12 overlooks, access to 2 short hikes (1 1/2 to 2 miles each) and new visitor center.

Uncompahgre National Forest
Encompasses the north San Juan Mountains and provides recreation of all types around Ouray, Ridgway and Telluride Colorado. It includes 3 wilderness areas, several peaks over 14.000 ft. and is very accessible by numerous hiking trails and backcountry roads that were once the routes to many mine sites of the late 1800's. Rivers and streams are also abundant and provide excellent fishing and kayaking.

Mesa Verde National Park World Cultural Heritage Site
These cliff dwellings and other works of early people are the most notable and best preserved in the United States. The entrance to the Park is approximately a 2 1/2 hr. drive from Ridgway and it takes another 1/2 hr. to reach the cliff dwellings, but because of the great significance of Mesa Verde you may decide it is worth the trip - it is a very scenic drive. Perhaps the best time to visit is during the spring and fall when the summer crowds are not present.

Colorado National Monument
Preserves one of the grand landscapes of the American West. Bold, big, and brilliantly colored, the Monument includes thirty-two square miles of canyons, plateaus, and massive towers of naturally sculpted rock. Rim Rock Drive is an awesome road bike ride or a great scenic drive with numerous pullouts and some hiking options. Web site has a great map. Ridgway Town Park
Pleasant scenic olde time Town Park - picnic tables in the shade of tall Cottonwood trees, restaurants, grocery, bakery, coffee shop/bookstore, retail shops and galleries all border Town Park. Also, kids playground, tennis courts, winter ice skating rink and multi-use-trail starts by tennis courts and heads north along the river to Ridgway State Park (2 miles). Town Park hosts several summer weekend events, most notably an Arts and Crafts Fair in mid-August. Park located 2 blocks from the Chipeta Sun Lodge and Spa.

Mine Tour
Ride the mine train 3,350 ft. horizontally into Gold Hill. The mine is adequately lighted, clean and has excellent ventilation with a temperature of 50 degrees. This mine produced $90 million in Silver, $8 million in Gold, and millions of pounds of Lead, Zinc and Copper. A guide will accompany you; he can answer questions and relate the legend and lore of the mine. You will see the equipment used in the mine and learn of mining techniques. This is an excellent way to experience the mining heritage of the San Juan Mountains of Southwest Colorado. Located between Ridgway and Ouray.

Cross-country skiing / backcountry skiing and snow shoeing
Provides excellent enjoyment of the snowy mountain landscape via many of the area's "Backroads and Trails". Snow shoeing requires no more skill than hiking and periodically the Chipeta will offer cross-country ski lessons. Mountain Bike Touring
On quiet backroads and jeep roads, with spectacular scenery and Inn to Inn bike touring possibilities between the nicely spaced towns. A few trails provide some great single-track riding including; an awesome 45 minute downhill! Car or Jeep Touring on area roads is beyond compare for scenery and history.

Waterfall Hikes
4 spectacular well known waterfalls - Ouray has 2 within a short walk - the unique Box Canyon Falls and Cascade Falls plus, Telluride has 2 requiring more of a hike. Bridal Veil Falls in Telluride is the highest free-falling waterfall in Colorado at 365 ft.! The other is Bear Creek Falls. Many other smaller falls can be seen along 4 wheel drive roads and hiking trials.
Uncompahgre Riverway Trail
A multi-use trail from the Ridgway Town Park (start by tennis courts) to Ridgway State Park a 2+ mile distance one way. Once at the State Park many other trail options present themselves. Most of the trail is concrete, but some sections are gravel. Nice trail for families - away from traffic. The State Park has fun mountain biking on compacted gravel trails. Other trail segments are planned.
Wildlife Viewing
A few seasonal highlights. Mule Deer are always present even wandering Ridgway Colorado at night. An Elk herd of 100-200 graze in a field within view of the Chipeta from late March to early May. Bald Eagles often roost along the Uncompahgre River near Ridgway during the winter. Hawks are common. Big Horn Sheep and Mountain Goats can be found high in the San Juan Mountains. Humming Birds provide summer entertainment at the Chipeta feeders.
Balloon Flights all year over Ridgway.
Discover the "gentle adventure" of hot air ballooning as you rise with the sun over the spectacular Ridgway Valleys. Nowhere is there a more beautiful place for the memorable experience of lighter than air flight. At sunrise passengers are invited to help inflate the 7 story tall balloon. The flight lasts approximately 1 hr. (total experience lasts 3 hr.). After returning to the valley floor passengers are treated to a traditional champagne celebration with light brunch. Scenic Western Ranches Tour
The most beautiful working cattle ranches in the United States of America fill the valleys around Ridgway Colorado. This "Tour" by car or bike passes through incredibly appealing western landscapes in 3 valleys with Ridgway at the center. The Chipeta can provide you with directions for a loop tour of each valley. Ranch examples include; Ralph Lauren's Double RL west of town with over 15,000 acres hugging the base of the Mount Sneffels Range (Sneffels - 14,150 ft.). East of town Sawtooth, Sleeping Indian and Chimney Peak Ranches cover much of the valley between the jagged Cimarrons to the east and Mount Baldy to the south.
Ice Climbing
The Ouray Ice Climbing Park is a one of a kind gorge and is recognized throughout the United States as a top ice-climbing destination. Its easy access also makes it available to spectators. Ride Telluride Gondola
Enclosed Gondola travels between towns of Telluride and the Mountain Village. It is FREE public transportation providing the best over all views of the Telluride Valley and surrounding mountains. Trip each way is about 12 minutes and there are times during spring and fall when it does not run. Summer - you can take a mountain bike up the mountain and ride trails down!
Historical Museums
Excellent museums will give you an appreciation of the region's fascinating history. Treasured Indian hunting grounds gave way to prospectors searching for, and finding gold and silver. To supply the booming mining towns the railroads were built on incredibly difficult terrain. Ranching and then tourism became established as more settlers arrived and hard times befell the mines.
