Waunita Hot Springs Ranch Description: Waunita Hot Springs Ranch, located high in the Colorado Rockies 8,946 ft. elevation, is 10 miles west of the Continental Divide in Gunnison, Colorado. The ranch is surrounded by Gunnison National Forest land and summer pasture. U.S. Forest permits and private leases enable us to ride on, pasture and otherwise enjoy use of hundreds of thousands of acres in eastern Gunnison County.Additional Information: Our remote location means guests aren't disturbed by passing traffic (maybe a yelping coyote now and then). Usually the only creatures you encounter while riding forest trails are occasional deer and elk. And the stars are always bright in Waunita Country! The lodges are located at the edge of the forest overlooking Tomichi Dome and a high "mountain park." Cattle can be seen grazing in the Waunita Valley. Although we are only ten miles from the Continental Divide and scenic mountains surround our valley, the ranch grounds are comparatively level. This means the front yard is suitable for an evening softball game and the walk to and from the corral is an easy one. If you jog, you'll find the county road in front of the ranch quite suitable for early morning workouts. The Lodge: Although many first time guests inquire about cabin accommodations, they soon discover that "lodge living" has several advantages. In the Main Lodge you'll wake up to the smell of bacon cooking and coffee brewing. You may even choose to sneak downstairs in your robe to get that first cup of coffee. It's only a short stroll to the dining room for meals or the lobby for an activity gathering. Even the convenience of retrieving a personal belonging from your room, checking on a sleeping child, or going up to "catch 40 winks" yourself is more convenient in a lodge setting. The Hillside Lodge, with its two sections of four rooms or two family units each, is ideal for small family groups. And yet there's complete privacy. Every room - with the exception of the second room of four two-roomed units - has a private bath. Most baths are tub/shower combinations. Meals: We only know how to cook one way ... Southern Western home style. Emphasis in the kitchen is on homemade, wholesome, fresh, plentiful and tasty. Where else can you get such food as "made from scratch" muffins, biscuits, rolls, cakes, pies, pancakes and cheesecake. There's also lots of salads, veggies, poultry, fish, pork and beef. Where else (except home) can you at any time of day help yourself to the fruit bowl, hot chocolate, tea, coffee and cookies. Folks like our food! The no-alcohol policy sets the tone for genuine good fun - a healthy, wholesome atmosphere. Amenities: You expect certain features at a dude ranch... good horses, comfortable & clean accommodations, good food. friendly atmosphere, scenic location... These are all standard at Waunita Hot Springs Ranch. Let us tell you about features at Waunita which we call serendipities... Webster describes a serendipity as "the faculty of making happy or interesting discoveries unexpectedly or by accident." It has occurred to us that there are a number of "serendipities" to be discovered at Waunita Hot Springs Ranch... pleasant surprises, if you will. Here are some of them.THE HOT SPRINGS *** It so happens that we are blessed with an almost unlimited supply of crystal clear hot water...about 300,000 gallons a day. That means you can use all the hot water you wish and never be concerned about running out. Our swimming pool feels like a warm bath - 95 degrees most of the time - the favorite gathering spot after the evening's activities. And the pool is huge by comparison. The generous supply of hot water also means there's plenty for keeping the lodges cozy and warm. THE FAMILY-TYPE OPERATION *** Waunita is owned and operated by the Pringle family. At any given time during the summer you'll find family members actively involved in ranch activities. Rod may be escorting a scenic vehicle trip, Junelle in the office, Ryan overseeing a cookout, and Tammy in the kitchen. Even 15-year old Randi Renee and 12-year old Kolby are eager to join in ranch activities with the younger set, along with 6- year old Dani Shea. So you get the personal attention of the owners/operators who care about you and your vacation experience. The ranch is our home and chosen lifestyle - not just a job - and three generations of Pringles in residence mean we are sensitive to the needs and interests of all ages. SMALL NUMBER OF GUESTS *** Since we accommodate about 45 guests, you'll find it easy to get to know everyone, and yet there's enough folks to make activities interesting. There's almost always an assortment of ages, and a friend for everyone. Over and over we hear guests remark that it's like being a part of one big happy family! OUR STAFF *** Through contacts at Christian Colleges we are able to recruit a competent, caring staff' of Christian young people. Guests regularly compliment our fine staff! HIGH PERCENTAGE OF RETURNING GUESTS *** Last year almost half our guests were "returnees," with another 30% referred to us by previous guests. That lets you know folks enjoy vacations at Waunita Hot Springs Ranch. Returning guests are always eager to "show the ropes" to first-timers. OUR LONGEVITY AT THE RANCH *** This means you can be assured that we're not 'here today, gone tomorrow." We've spent over 40 years at Waunita, all the while working to make the ranch and program better and better. Our sons grew up here, learning to love and understand the dude ranch business. Our commitment to the ranch and our guests is long term. THE MUSICAL TALENT AROUND THE RANCH *** Music has been an important part of our family and ranch life since the "Pringle boys" were young. The music show each week is a delightful, toe-tapping event. Activities: Horseback riding is the featured activity at the ranch. Vehicle trips to the high country are planned for non-riders and for those who want a change of pace. The vehicles are also available to take you to the forest cookout sites, if you choose not to go by horseback.
Fishermen can take advantage of our stocked lakes. Licenses are not required at these sites. However, you will need a license when fishing the area streams and reservoirs. You should bring your own fishing gear, although some fishing gear will be for sale in the gift shop. You'll enjoy the fish fry that is a part of the Thursday evening cookout.
Following the Thursday evening cookout at the Canyon Creek forest camp, we'll offer an overnight for those who wish to spend the night "under the stars." You may bring your own sleeping bag for this activity or use one of ours. Tents are provided and foam mats are available.
The evening hayride and marshmallow roast is always fun. And one night each week we'll feature a Western music show. An evening of square dancing is scheduled, complete with instruction for all.
A whitewater raft trip on the Taylor River is offered on Tuesday, as well as a float trip on the Gunnison River. You may choose a morning of shopping in Gunnison or a visit to the Gunnison Pioneer Museum.
Ranch animals, besides our string of fine horses, include lambs, goats, pigs, ducks, chickens, dogs and cats. Younger folks may help with feeding small animals. Please do not bring pets to the ranch.
The many other activities available at the ranch include scenic 4 x 4 trips, evening hayride, overnight campout, fishing, hiking, Gunnison River raft trip, square dancing, rockhunting, softball, movies, slide show, ping-pong, pool, horseshoes and swimming. A full week's activities are planned for you. . . or you may just choose to relax.
September is a special time in the mountains. The brilliant display of fall colors is a once-a-year show. From December thru mid-April ranch facilities are available for downhill ski groups, snowmobile clubs, church retreats, or small group meetings.
Horseback riding is available every day except Sunday. And guests are assigned their own horse for the week. The riding program begins on Monday morning with instruction in the arena. Then it's off on the first trail ride in a group of about 8. As the week progresses, guests may take loping instruction in the arena and enjoy this skill on some of the trails. There's a wide variety of trails, as well as rides to three different cookout sites. Arena games for youngsters and cattle penning for adults on Thursday morning are featured events. The above timberline rides to Stella Mountain and Baldy Mountain are simply breathtaking. We begin children riding at 6 years of age. Rides generally are divided by age and ability or families may ride together. Families with younger children may ride together on beginner trails, since some trails are only suitable for adults and older children.
