Tumbling River Ranch Description: Tumbling River is one of the finest guest ranches in the Rockies. We have a 60 year tradition of giving guests what they expect and deserve of a Colorado guest ranch.Additional Information: Superb Location: nestled in a secluded valley high in the heart of the Rockies; miles from a highway yet easy to reach from Denver; at 9200 feet surrounded by 14,000' mountains & millions of acres of national forest; within riding distance of the Continental Divide; surrounded by cascading streams, abundant big game, wildflowers & aspen.Exciting Activities: find horses with extraordinary secluded trails; vehicle trips to long abandoned gold and silver mines as well as to seldom seen ghost towns; raft trips; overnight pack trips; a great variety of trout fishing in streams, ranch ponds and high mountain lakes; hiking, climbing, rock hounding, swimming, and a terrific program for kids; evening activities including square dancing, hayrides and campfires. Exceptional Facilities: complete comfort assured with fireplaces and private baths in your rooms; accommodations available in either a variety of cabins or in two historic old ranch houses; daily maid service; heated pool, sauna, game rooms, lounge, trading post and beautiful streams and ponds just outside of your room. And the home-cooked meals are superlative. Friendly Atmosphere: the ranch is our home so you will truly be our guest here; the warm, informal atmosphere has become a tradition and you can wear your jeans day or night. Perfect Size: about a dozen families are here during the typical summer week and we think this is just right for our guests -- enough to assure that there's plenty going on and that you'll be able to meet other interesting folks, but not so many that you'll feel lost. While we could fill up lots more cabins, we've no plans to enlarge. There truly is something for everyone here at Tumbling River, but it all revolves around personal service and hospitality. You have our promise that we will do everything possible to make your vacation one of the best ever. We sincerely hope that you will be able to join us one day soon. Amenities: The original homestead cabin, built around the turn of the century, is still the favorite of many guests. The Main Ranch House and the Ranch Pueblo were both built during the 1920's and reflect a charm that can no longer be duplicated. An early mayor of Denver built the Main Ranch House as his mountain home. It contains 5 guest bedrooms (each with fireplace and bath), the dining room for the ranch, a large living room with huge stone fireplace, and a lounge. Bighorn sheep can often be seen from this ranch house. Tumbling River has a dozen cabins (typically with two separate suites that can be opened to adjoin). Each suite has a private bath and fireplace. In addition, there is a heated pool, game room with ping pong, pool, etc., office, corral, trading post, and a pond stocked with trout. The Pueblo house is truly a showplace. It was built by the daughter of Adolph Coors as her mountain home. Indians from Taos were used in the construction and the carving of decorative beams. The Spanish-Indian décor is extraordinary. The Pueblo has seven guest bedrooms, each with a fireplace, as well as dining room, a large living room with a huge fireplace overlooking a pond (stocked with trout), game room, and lounge. The homestead cabin is just across Three Mile Creek from the Pueblo. Many of our family reunions love the pueblo as it accommodates up to 20 family members. Staying at the Pueblo house is a great way to enjoy a family reunion with none of the work. Activities: Tumbling River is surrounded by Pike National forest at the air-conditioned altitude of 9200 feet. We are at a perfect location for hiking . Mt. Bierstertat is one of the many 14,000 foot mountains in our area. It overlooks the ranch and with the base only six miles away, it offers a great challenge & a great tale when you get home.
For those that are seeking nature walks, we send you with Mary Dale (Queen mother at Tumbling river) to 12,200 feet to see spectacular flowers and views. We are surrounded Pike National forest which has endless hiking trails.
From late May through mid-August we offer our guests a terrific white water rafting experience. We drive you to a beautiful area near the head waters of the Arkansas River where there are rapids equal to any.
A bonded rafting company provides the rafts, boatmen and life jackets, etc. Children should be at least 8 year old. There is a modest extra charge. You've got to try it!
Our ranch is unique in its location. The remote high mountains that surround us offer not only spectacular scenery but, in addition, contain a wealth of unspoiled history.
The high mountains that surround us are filled with old mines and abandoned cabins. We're still finding them -- in places its hard to imagine humans surviving.
And with the mining came the old narrow gauge trains, often climbing well above timberline. The routes of the old stagecoaches and trains are now useable by us for vehicle trips. So during the summer we explore these remote, historic areas. The feeling of discovery is exciting. Our ranch is one of the few places you can really have a chance to see the unspoiled history of the Rockies.
In addition to visiting remote areas, you will also have a chance to visit well preserved old towns such as Georgetown and Fairplay. There you will see exceptional museums with relics from our area and be able to browse in the quaint shops.
We keep a herd of close to 90 horses with variety enough so that there is one suited to the experience of most any rider. Since many guests have had little riding experience, we begin the week with a very basic riding orientation program in the arena. Guests may have as much instruction as they feel necessary. You can also schedule arena time with any of our wranglers for additional instruction through the week.
We offer different trail rides every day except Sundays. The rides vary from long to short and fast to slow. We are one of the only ranches that can get you extremely high in elevation; we ride up to 12, 200 feet! In all cases we provide experienced wranglers to accompany all rides.
With millions of acres of extraordinary scenery around us, you will never get bored on the rides. By the middle of the week we hope you'll be ready for some all day riding, and perhaps by Thursday you will join us on an overnight pack trip. We have three sided shelters complete with mattress, sleeping bags and pillows. But the really big draw is the big steak meal and guitar at 10, 500 feet. We have special use permits which authorize us to ride in Pike National Forest.
We will select a horse for you at the beginning of the week and, if you like the choice that will be “your” horse for the week. For riding safety and comfort, we strongly encourage you to bring boots or at least something with a good heel. Tennis shoes and the like are not suitable for riding in the mountains.
On Saturday it's rodeo time. Both kids and adults will have a chance to compete in barrel racing, pole bending and all. Its great fun to see folks (who a week before had never been on a horse) proudly wearing a blue ribbon on Saturday night. But don't worry; you'll have plenty of time to practice.
