Activities:
Fishing: Fishing is a popular activity with young and old, experienced and novice fishers. We stock our section of Fall River right from our bridge! Rainbow trout are the most common catch. The fisherman above is Tom Greenan, a long-time guest at Castle Mountain and an expert, enthusiastic fisherman. In this photo he is fishing in front of his favorite suite, Little River. At right is Joel Trammel, a member of our staff-family for many years. Joel worked at Castle Mountain every summer between high school graduation and his second year of graduate school. Hiking: Castle Mountain Lodge is on the border of Rocky Mountain National Park. From your door at the lodge you can access the entire Park trail system. From your door, follow one of the game trails up the hillside to the meadow area. On the southern edge of the meadow is the Park's Deer Ridge Trail. Follow this trail to the west and you'll head up Deer Mountain for spectacular views of the Estes valley, Longs Peak and the Front Range. Farther west, the Deer Mountain trail connects with Park trails that cover Horseshoe Park and the Mummy Range, or Beaver Meadows and the Front Range. Follow this trail to the east and you'll end up in the town of Estes Park. You can hike from your door over the Continental Divide to Grand Lake - a trip that "old-timers" made completely on foot or horseback. Nowdays, people tend to drive to trailheads and take shorter hikes. Wildlife Watching: Our thirty-five acres on the border of Rocky Mountain National Park comprise an ideal habitat for wildlife. Deer and elk are most visible in the winter when there are fewer leaves to hide them. Bighorn sheep and marmots visit the rocks on Castle Mountain just across the river from our cottages and coyotes patrol the grounds after dark. Squirels, chipmunks, and bunnies are plentiful in the spring, summer, and fall. Racoons visit year-round. Extensive bird houses and feeders make our grounds a lively aviary year round. Hummingbirds are summertime favorites. Alas, elk like both the birdseed and hummingbird nectar and they do quite a bit of damage. We've also seen fox, bobcat, mountain lion and bear, but they are so wary of humans that the sightings are quite rare. Except for the last two years when dry conditions have cheated local bears of their normal berry buffet and guests occasionally gather to watch a bear eat our birdseed and hummingbird nectar. Playground: Our playground has a wonderful slide, climbing bars, and swings for kids of all ages. We also have a mallet pool game on the river bank, horseshoes and shuffleboard in the playground area. Don't forget to explore the our many acres of mountainside, follow the trails into the Park, and try your hand at catching trout for dinner from our well-stocked river.
