Next door at the historic MacGregor Ranch Homestead, the museum offers a window into life in the Rocky Mountains in the late 1800's. Still operated as a working cattle ranch, the property is preserved as open space in an educational trust to benefit the learning experiences of students from all over Northern Colorado. The ranch, being adjacent to Rocky Mountain National Park, offers trail heads into two of the Park's trail systems. The Black Canyon trail connects to both the Lawn Lake trail which climbs into the heart of the Mummy Range, and the Gem Lake trail which offers an easy hike, suitable for the whole family. The spectacular vistas of the Estes valley and continental divide from many points along this trail make it a trip not to be missed. A short drive into the National Park will offer many more hiking opportunities on the varied trail systems of the park.
Black Canyon Inn is located just over a half mile from Lake Estes. There, one will find fishing, boat and canoe rentals, picnic grounds and a paved walking and bicycle path surrounding the lake. There is a swimming beach, however, the water is but a few hours from being melted snow and quite cold even in the Summer. If fly fishing is of interest, there are several shops in town that offer supplies, lessons and guide service on the Big Thompson and Fall Rivers. A challenging and enjoyable day can be spent testing your skill against the trout species that inhabit our streams and lakes.
Estes Park offers a paradise for golfers of all abilities. Both the Executive nine hole course and the eighteen hole Estes Park Golf Club are operated by the Estes Valley Recreation and Park District as public courses. The scenery is awe inspiring, and the effect of the light air at this high altitude will surprise you on the distance of some of your shots. Beware, you may have to share the fairways with the deer, elk and coyote that frequent the manicured grass of both courses.
Devils Gulch Road, the county extension of MacGregor Avenue, north of the town limits, is a gentle and pleasant bicycle ride for all family members. Bicycles are available for rent downtown at several locations. About a ten mile loop will take you out Devils Gulch to its connection to Dry Gulch Road, down a scenic, gentle descent to Lake Estes bike path which leads along the shores of Lake Estes back to the downtown area.
The town of Estes Park plays host to several horse shows and a rodeo at its Stanley Park Arena each Summer. It is also the site of many other special events such as the Longs Peak Scottish Festival, the Estes Park Wool Market and other family oriented productions.
Winter in Estes Park is a rewarding time to visit the mountains. The deer, elk and bighorn sheep make the Estes Valley their wintering grounds and are often viewable along the roads and streets around town. In the Spring and Fall, the Estes Valley is visited by over a hundred species of birds during their seasonal migrations. The National Park offers an excellent venue for cross-country skiing and snow-shoeing along its many trails. Equipment is readily available for rent at several locations in town. Downhill skiing is available at the Eldora Ski Area in Nederland, which is a one hour drive south of Estes Park by way of a well maintained state highway. Cross country skiing and snow shoeing have become very popular in the area of Bear Lake.
We are happy to help plan any activities that you would like in order to ensure that your visit with us is a pleasant one. Remember, after any of these activities, or in lieu of them, one of the most gratifying ways to enjoy the Rocky Mountains is to take in the grandeur of the scenery from your deck or patio just outside your room or cabin.
