The 23-square block area of Lower Downtown, or LoDo as the residents of Denver affectionately call it, marks the origin of the city. In 1858, General William Larimer built his cabin and declared it Denver City, named after the governor of the Kansas territory, and within 25 years, Denver grew to become a major city in the country.
The LoDo neighborhood was declared an historic district in 1988 and today gives protection to over 100 historic buildings. Today there is no shortage of things to do in Lower Downtown.
