Blue Skies Inn Description: Fun at Blue Skies Inn B&B a Manitou Springs CO bed and breakfast inn, getaway accommodations and lodging by Pikes Peak area and Colorado Springs, ColoradoAdditional Information: Blue Skies Inn B&B is a charming bed and breakfast in Manitou Springs, a small mountain town nestled at the base of Pikes Peak in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. We are located by Colorado Springs and are near to Denver, Canon City and Pueblo. Our inn is located right in the middle of our many area attractions. Within half a mile of Garden of the Gods and the Pikes Peak Cog Railway, we are the same distance from the Cave of the Winds and the Manitou Cliff Dwellings. White-water river rafting in Buena Vista, Canon City and the Royal Gorge is an hour's drive. Sunset Sky themes are our favorite, so we've painted our most romantic suite with evening sky, shading from pink to lavender and filled with sun-streaked clouds. Enjoy the end of your day among the rosy clouds of sunset. Our bed surrounded by Roman columns and overhung with lush flowers creates a fanciful setting for enjoying the corner fireplace. Watch the sun set over Pikes Peak from your private sitting room. Whirlpool tub for two and separate shower in bathroom featuring hand-painted tile murals inset in hues of rose and burgundy. Blue Skies Since we're called Blue Skies, we named a suite after our reason for being in Colorado. Dream under a filmy canopy in a sky blue room with handpainted clouds. Fireplace for romance or snowy nights. Bask in the large sun-filled sitting room, or unwind in the whirlpool in our bathroom tiled with many hues of blue with a rainbow border. Queen bed in bedroom, Daybed & Trundle in sitting room Morning Glory Handpainted morning glory vines climb whimsically over the walls of this pretty robin's egg blue suite. Extravagant boughs of lavender silk flowers edge the backlit canopy that floats over a big brass bed. Corner tiled fireplace completes the romantic scene. Breakfast in your attached Sun Room. Relax in the pale green whirlpool tub in a tile aviary illuminated by a twinkling candelabra. King bed in bedroom, Daybed & Trundle in sitting room Starlight Painted shades of glorious blue to portray the artist's vision of the Universe, this suite has stars, galaxies and comets to amaze you. A shimmering silver canopy streams over the brass bed. Flames dance in the corner fireplace. Borrow some sci-fi videos from us to watch as you imagine where the aliens are in the wall mural. Enjoy our bathroom fancifully tiled in salmon and cobalt blue with mirrored "time windows" while taking a bubblebath in the soaking tub. Overlooks Secret Garden. Queen bed in bedroom, Daybed & Trundle in sitting room Ferdinand's Garden In earlier days, Ferdinand, the Briarhurst gardener, planted orchards and grew flowers for the mansion. In his honor, we have designed a suite in restful shades of green and lavender with sweeping handpainted floral bouquets over doorways, mirrors and bed. Enjoy the fireplace while tucked under a backlit brocade bed canopy. Handpainted floral tiles add to the varied hues of burgundy in the bathroom where you'll find a large soaking tub for two and a tiled shower. A sunny Sitting Room completes the suite, with a breakfast area overlooking our courtyard. Queen bed in bedroom, Daybed & Trundle in sitting room Dot Matrix Decorated in a tropical African theme, this suite has walls painted as textured pale yellow parchment flecked with gold. African masks and decorative borders add bold colors. Splash in the giant shower for two that is tiled in dazzling black and white with a few sparkling surprises tucked in the borders. The quiet sitting room looks out into the woods and the bedroom has a view of our Secret Garden. King bed in bedroom, Daybed in sitting room Midnight Woods Enjoy the cool feel of woodlands in shades of aqua and deepest green. Stenciled with hundreds of varied ferns, this suite will make you think of walks in deep woods. Read or watch TV under an embroidered bed canopy lit with tiny white lights. Roman bathroom tiled in shades of green has giant walk-in shower. Queen bed in bedroom, Daybed in sitting room Deep Blue Enjoy an artist's playful interpretation of ocean. This suite has a whimsical sea motif throughout the sitting room, bedroom and bathroom with waves stencilled in silver. Seashell chairs and ancestors' ocean-going trunks complete the undersea fantasy. Handpainted brightly-colored tropical fish can be found in tile murals and swimming in the pedestal sink. Splash with abandon in a huge tiled shower for two. King bed, Daybed and trundle in bedroom Indian Rock Art II Warm colors and ancient Indian images in our first rock art suite have been a favorite, so we've created a variation upon that theme. This suite has painted pictographs and pictograph tiles chosen for their relation to the story of our site. Ute Indians camped here in the last century and left arrowhead flakes that we have found. Did you know that the Utes were called the "Blue Sky People?" Queen bed in bedroom, Daybed & Trundle in sitting room Indian Rock Art I Feel as though you've discovered a remote sandstone canyon wall that ancient Indian tribes used for their art images. Painted in many hues of apricot and pale sandstone shades, this suite has a warm and relaxing atmosphere. Read our pictograph books in this suite to interpret meanings of painted Indian symbols in the mural. Enormous shower featuring hand-painted tile in Southwest colors. Queen bed Activities: Manitou Springs straddles the creek dubbed Fountaine qui Bouille by the French fur trappers who were the first Europeans to explore the Pikes Peak region. The rushing waters of Fountain Creek at the base of Ute pass inspired English immigrant and railroad magnate Dr. William Bell to plat out a new town.
Just east of the downtown area, Dr. Bell carved out "The Briarhurst," his personal estate. Blue Skies Inn is located on the eastern quarter of Dr. Bell's estate, which includes his historic 1873 Carriage House, the oldest standing structure in Manitou Springs. The Gothic Revival architecture of Dr. Bell's Carriage House was the inspiration for the board-and batten exteriors of our three B&B buildings.
Dr. Bell envisioned his settlement as a haven where Easterners suffering from consumption and asthma could benefit from the healing spring waters that gush from nine sites around Manitou Springs. Dr. Bell's vision of Manitou was never fully realized due to the sudden influx of people into the area during the "Pikes Peak or Bust!" gold rush. Present-day historic attractions of Manitou Springs are a curious mix of Dr. Bell's health-colony idealism and the hardscrabble pragmatism of Pikes Peak's mining culture.
Within a half mile of Blue Skies Inn, our guests can experience every aspect of Manitou Springs' varied and colorful history. Not-to-be-missed attractions include:
Manitou Springs Historic District: Downtown Manitou offers a charming example of turn-of-the-century architecture housing a wide variety of shops and restaurants. Just about every kind of Colorado souvenir one could imagine can be found within easy walking distance in the five blocks that make up downtown Manitou Springs.
Manitou Springs Foothills Neighborhoods: Just as interesting are the residential neighborhoods that surround downtown. Manitou Springs is a foothills town, inhospitable to tract housing, and every city lot has challenged some designer to fit a house into a limited, often tilted, space. Over a century of individualized construction has produced eclectic and eccentric housing designs that are as varied and odd as human nature.
Manitou Cliff Dwellings: At the turn of the century, several cliff dwelling structures from the southwest corner of our state were moved to this area as a tourist attraction. They are authentically reconfigured and there is an accompanying museum of artifacts. The Cliff Dwellings are near the entrance to the Cave of the Winds, only about one mile from Blue Skies Inn.
Mineral Springs: At the turn of the century, Manitou Springs was known as "Saratoga of the West," and many came to soak in or drink the mineral spring waters. Nine springs are still bubbling, and you may taste the water from each one, all different according to the minerals that they contain.
Cave of the Winds: We're told that this vast labyrinth of caves actually extends under Blue Skies Inn. Until we excavate our own entrance, we recommend you travel to the official entrance north of town about one mile away.
Cave of the Winds has recently expanded to include geologically-intensive guided tours with a wide array of length and difficulty, varying from a stroll underground to a four-hour spelunking tour with headlamp and kneepads. Cave of the Winds is open 9AM to 9PM summers, and 10AM to 5PM winters. Call 719 685-4444 to reserve your tour.
Pikes Peak Attractions
Pikes Peak is accessible by trail, road and railroad. Every year on a Saturday in mid-August, hundreds jog up Barr Trail from Manitou Springs to the top of the mountain, a thirteen mile run. On Sunday, some of the same people run up and down Barr Trail. There is no restriction preventing anyone from running or hiking up Pikes Peak any time of year, but for those of us who are, shall we say, less adventurous, there are other routes to the peak and other attractions that surround the mountain:
Pikes Peak Cog Railway: About a mile from Blue Skies Inn is the terminal for the cog-wheel railroad that climbs Pikes Peak four or five times daily in the summer, and two or three times a day up until Christmas. We recommend the Cog Railway as the easiest and most relaxing way to sample every kind of Colorado mountain scenery and enjoy the vast panoramic views of the Great Plains that can be seen from the peak. Wildlife abounds on the train route, including marmots, mule deer, elk and bighorn sheep.
Prices are currently $26 per adult and $13.50 for children ages three to eleven. Prices from July 1 through August 19 will be $26 for adults and $14 for children. There are at least two trains daily, more as demand dictates. The whole trip takes about three to four hours, with a forty minute layover on the summit. Reservations are highly recommended for high summer. Call (719) 685-5401. |
