St. Cloud Hotel Description: Located in downtown Cañon City, Colorado, the St. Cloud Hotel offers historic charm with modern lodging conveniences for vacationers and group functions.Additional Information: Guests at the St.Cloud Hotel can choose to climb the white-spindled staircase or ride the antique Otis elevator to reach their chosen bed chambers. All 35 guest rooms feature queen- or king-size beds, fine linens, excellent quality mattresses, ceiling fans, telephones, cable TV, antique pieces, and private baths. Some boast two queen-size beds, and others reveal old-fashioned, claw-footed bathtubs and stained-glass transoms. The vintage doorknobs and light switches, slightly slanted floors and crooked doorways add a yesteryear charm to this grand old hotel. Each chamber is somewhat different in design and decor, and doors to unoccupied rooms are left open, thus allowing guests the pleasure of peeking at neighboring furnishings. The one- and two-bedroom suites, with kitchens and kitchenettes, nicely accommodate guests planning extended stays. Here, an 1850 burled-walnut grand piano resides in one corner, an ornate tin ceiling gleams from above, rich-red carpeting sheathes the floor, and comfortable armchairs and sofas invite guests to read awhile or indulge in quiet conversation. Classical music plays softly, the aroma of bread baking teases the appetite, and subdued laughter emanates from the adjacent Coffee House. On the National Register of Historic Places, this grand hotel has the distinction of having been built twice. It was originally built in the mining town of Silver Cliff in 1883. Three years later, when that town's economy collapsed, the hotel was dismantled brick-by-brick and hauled by horse-drawn wagon 50 miles north to Cañon City, where the carefully numbered bricks were reassembled and a fourth floor and mansard roof added. When Cañon City served as a popular location for Hollywood movie makers, the St.Cloud Hotel hosted film greats Tom Mix, John Wayne, Burt Lancaster, Slim Pickins and Charles Bronson. Now, after standing empty for years, the hotel has been lovingly restored by new owners Susan and Don Teuton. Lace curtains, fresh paint, quality carpeting, period light fixtures, attractive furniture and exceptionally comfortable beds grace the interior, thus bringing it full circle, back to its original splendor. Amenities: Dining in the casually elegant dining room is as popular with locals as it is with overnight guests (always a good sign). Tempting appetizers, soups, salads and sandwiches are available during mid-day, and a more sophisticated menu, offering carefully prepared and beautifully presented tender ribeye steaks, crispy fried chicken, savory salmon filets and classic pasta dishes, are served during the evening hours when live piano music entertains guests. Although entrées are generous, few can resist the chef's tantalizing desserts. In addition to the main dining room, the St.Cloud Hotel features a Western-style Bar & Grille, with a remarkably handsome antique back bar, and the cozy Bakery & Coffee House, serving home-baked pastries, croissants, scones and cakes, along with fresh-ground gourmet coffees, rich lattés and frothy cappuccinos. Activities: Located in the Historic District of downtown Cañon City, a comfortable small town with a lovely climate just 45 minutes southwest of Colorado Springs, the St. Cloud Hotel serves as an ideal home base for vacationers seeking to visit area attractions and participate in some of the region's many outdoor activities.
