Whistler BC Lodging: Whistler, British Columbia Description: Whistler Vacation rental: one bedroom plus loft condo suite available for your vacation.Additional Information: This privately-owned vacation condo apartment in Glacier Lodge offers you a great location just a two minute walk from the mountain base without the hassle and added taxes you have to pay when you stay at hotel or resort properties.Activities: Who said Whistler was just a winter vacation spot? They lied!
Whistler actually gets more visitors in the summertime and there are even more things to do during the warm summer months than there is during the winter.
You can see wildlife such as American Bald eagles, Black bears, Hoary marmots, gophers, native birds (such as hummingbirds, Stellar jays, whiskijacks, ravens, and crows), deer, native fish (such as salmon, trout, char, steelhead), cougars, wolves, coyotes, bobcats, and rabbits.
See magnificent scenery such as alpine glaciers (for example Squamish Glacier covers 80 square miles of ice), ice caps, rugged volcanic peaks, ancient cedar forests (1000 years old, trees 50 feet around), pine and hemlock forests, waterfalls, alpine meadows, jade and blue coloured alpine lakes, valley wetlands, and volcanic craters. And it's not unusual to get a fresh dusting of snow above 7500 feet in mid-summer while the temperatures below are warm and comfortable.
Just check out some of these great summer fun adventures:
River Rafting: Try rafting down one of the local rivers around Whistler including the Green River, the Birkenhead River, or the Elaho/Squamish river system. You can also combine rafting with horseback riding or with barbecue lunches. And then there's heli-rafting no better way to get deep into the wilderness fast! Family and introductory packages are available from a variety of companies which range from easy-paced sightseeing tours to extreme level sports.
Wildlife Tours: Many tour companies from snowshoeing to mountain biking offer expert wilderness guides as part of their overall package. However, there are two tours that are specifically designed for the wildlife enthusiast.
The first is the Bear Viewing Tour. Fifty Black bears including 12 mothers live in the Whistler area and graze on the ski trails from May to July on clover and horsetail; then, from August to October, they move to the Hemlock forests to eat sugary huckleberries in preparation for hibernation. These day-long tours travel by foot as well as 4X4s, and you'll visit bear dens, feeding grounds, and see mothers with their cubs.
The second is the Mountain Ecology Tour. Qualified guides will show you an overview of Whistler wildlife, vegetation, glaciers, rainforests, alpine meadows, and old growth forests. And, of course, some phenomenal sunsets to end your day on the mountain.
Golf: Whistler is rapidly becoming internationally renown for its golf facilities. There are three designer golf courses in the Whistler Valley and four more in the nearby Sea-to-Sky Corridor. They are: the Whistler Valley Golf Club, the Chateau Whistler Golf Club, the Nicklaus North Golf Club, the Big Sky Golf & Country Club, the Furry Creek Golf Club, the Pemberton Valley Golf & Country Club, and the Squamish Valley Golf Club. Whistler is a world class golf destination featuring magnificent scenery and catering to all abilities of play. Golfing in the Coast Range mountains is a truly unique experience.
Tennis: Many courts are free to the public and indoor courts are available at Chateau Whistler, Delta Resort, or Whistler Racquet & Golf Resort.
All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs): There are a number of fun and different all-terrain vehicles to choose from such as Hummers, 4X4 vans, or Argos (eight wheeled amphibious vehicles). Guided packaged tours cater to both individuals and families. You can drive your own powerhorse through some of Whistler's most remote areas with final destinations like a historic abandoned gold mine, mud pits, the terrain park, rugged mountain slope trails, or old logging roads.
Trolley Tours: Affordable two-hour narrated tours teach visitors to Whistler about snowmaking operations, about Rainbow Park Heritage Site (where Myrtle & Alex Phillip purchased ten acres of land for $700 and opened Whistler's first tourist accommodations), and about local history, folklore, and orientation. Also see the magnificent homes of Blueberry Hill (where Prince Charles and the boys stayed when last visiting Whistler).
Blackcomb Base Adventure Zone: This family fun entertainment centre includes mini-golf, West Coast luge (we bet you've never tried that before!), great wall climbing facilities, trampolines, and much more.
Horseback Riding: Choose from several destinations and styles of ride including Remote Wilderness Ride, Western Ride, Ancient Cedars Ride, or Valley Ride. Some packages combine riding with BBQ cookouts or rafting as well. Horseback riding lessons are available on mountain-trained horses but many tours are challenging and designed specifically for experienced riders only.
Sightseeing By Air: Sightseeing helicopter flights are often combined with snowmobile runs or early morning breakfast junkets (imagine eating breakfast on a glacier at 8:00am!). Also, float plane sightseeing excursions can be combined with landing on remote alpine lakes or gourmet three-course meals (called the Sunset Fly & Dine). Or how about paragliding—a 3000 foot descent in 20 minutes over spectacular scenery.
Mountain Biking: Mountain biking is an activity open to all ages and levels of ability. Guided naturalist tours or skill-learning tours can be readily purchased but there are also plenty of self-guided opportunities on the abundant Whistler groomed and ungroomed trails for those desiring a more affordable alternative or a little more privacy. All equipment and instructions are provided. Combo packages include Hummer rides to the mountain peak with a bike descent to the valley floor (it's much more fun coming down than going up!) or canoe and kayak paddling out with biking back through forested trails.
Hiking: Numerous hiking trails open in the summer at different times depending on the snow pack (usually July). Ranging from half an hour to eight hours in length, many tours leave directly from Whistler Village; others take you out to more remote locations by van to begin. Combination tour packages include swimming hikes, salmon spawning hikes, orientation to Whistler Village hikes, nature hikes (where visitors are accompanied by an interpretative guide to point out the geological formations, flora, and fauna of the Whistler region). Hiking is an inexpensive or free activity that can be enjoyed by everyone of all fitness levels.
Fishing: Whistler (then called Alta Lake) was first known as a fantastic place to fish long before it rose to prominence as a ski resort. Nothing's changed: its still a fantastic place to fish. Many fishing tours will take you to the secret spots not accessible by roads with all equipment provided. Visitors can gain access to area lakes, rivers, creeks, and streams by plane, helicopter, or 4X4. There are five major ocean-run rivers plus two more that hold both wild and hatchery salmon. Fishing season generally runs April through October but some fishing is available all year round. Look forward to trying your hand against tough trophy fish varieties like steelheads, Rainbow trout, Brook trout, Cutthroat trout, Dolly Varden char, Pink salmon, Chinook salmon, and Sockeye salmon. (Be warned though, almost all fishing at Whistler is subject to a strongly enforced "catch and release" policy ... but that doesn't stop you from taking a picture of The Big One before letting it go!)
Fun Water Activities: Four of five Whistler lakes are strictly non-motorized and are of a comfortable temperature and clarity for swimming. Family facilities such as public BBQ pits and picnic areas, volleyball courts, and beaches are all free of charge. Opportunities to swim, windsurf, canoe, kayak, sail, water ski, jet ski, river raft, or go white-water rapid rafting are numerous. A variety of packaged tours including lunch stops or mountain biking combined with paddling are available.
Ski Lifts In The Summer: During the summer months, the ski lifts don't sit idle. Gondola Sightseeing tours and glacial skiing naturally use these facilities. In addition, lifts provide transportation to the starting destinations of many tours including horseback riding, hiking, and mountain biking packages.
Glacier Skiing: It goes without saying ... you can ski all year long at Whistler! Horstman Glacier atop Blackcomb Mountain is open to skiing year round.
