The heritage city of Nelson is situated on the west arm of Kootenay Lake, in British Columbia. Surrounded by mountains, the city enjoys a pleasant climate year around and offers abundant opportunities for summer activities such as hiking, fishing, golf, mountain biking and water sports of all kinds. In winter, Nelson enjoys an international reputation for some of the best dry powder snow in North America. Winter activities include two local downhill ski areas and an extensive network of cross country ski trails, in addition to literally thousands of square kilometers of back country access in both winter and summer. Visitors can explore the many art and craft galleries in Nelson's historic downtown, relax in one of the many cafes or wonderful restaurants and soak in the nearby natural cave hot springs. With over 350 restored heritage buildings, Nelson's picturesque setting has also become a dream location for films, including the Steve Martin movie "Roxanne" and more recently "Snow Falling On Cedars."
If you like hiking, mountain bike trail riding, flat or whitewater kayaking, canoeing or fishing, Nelson and the Kootenay region surrounding the city, offers an almost endless variety of possibilities for all levels of skill and ability. The kids will love the beach at Lakeside Park and at Kokanee Provincial Park, where, in late August through September, you can watch the Salmon spawning and learn all about the spawning process at the park's interpretive centre.
If you prefer to explore the city itself, there are a variety of self-guided tours including the heritage architecture walking tour, a cemetery tour and the Roxanne walking tour. You can pay a visit to the Nelson Museum or take a ride on the restored Streetcar which runs along the waterfront.
Or, perhaps you'd like to take a tour of the local brewery, Nelson Brewing Company, still operating from it's original location on Latimer Street. In the evenings, there is a wide choice of fine restaurants, cafes and pubs, many with outdoor patios.
July is "festival month" in the Nelson area. Starting with the Proctor Story Telling Festival in the first weekend of July, followed by the Starbelly Jam Music Festival in Crawford Bay over the second weekend.
The third weekend in July is the Nelson International Street Performers and Arts Festival. The largest arts and culture festival in the greater Kootenay region, "StreetFest" as it is known for short, blends a dynamic mix of street performance, crafts and foods from countries throughout the world, into a 3 day party that you won't want to miss! And it attracts over 60,000 site visits each festival, so you'll want to book accommodation early if you plan to be here during the festival week.
On the first weekend in August, be sure to catch the Kaslo Jazz Festival, a wonderful weekend of unforgettable music, in an intimate setting. A fantastic opportunity to see some of the world's great jazz and blues musicians up close and personal.
Throughout the summer you can take in Artwalk, a self-guided tour of local venues where the original works of local artisans are displayed. Don't miss the openings, on the first Friday night of July, August and September, when each venue launches a new exhibit and you can meet the artists personally.
If skiing and snowboarding is your passion, then in Winter, Nelson is the place to be! We are a destination without being a resort town -- A lovely combination of awesome snow and unforgettable terrain, down-to-earth people and prices that are still affordable. Locally, we have Whitewater Ski Resort and the Apex-Busk Cross Country Ski Area. Red Mountain Ski Resort is also within a one hour drive. For the more adventurous, cat ski and heli-ski opportunities are available close by.
Nelson is the kind of place where you'll come for a day and stay for a week (or want to at any rate).
