Please let us know before hand if you have any special diet requirements. Wine is served with afternoon appetizers and with dinner. Guests are welcome to bring their own liquor. Activities: Riding
"Horses" are the main program at Wild Rose Ranch from the end of April to mid October. Daily rides leave the Ranch in mid-morning, and depending on the trail selected, will return anywhere from two to seven hours later. Our rides may include a stop at a mountain lake for lunch or a trip to Premier Ridge. Our riding program has been developed to give guests a greater appreciation of the East Kootenay region, from the open pine forests to abandoned logging towns to the glacial erratics that give pause to the thousands of years of history of the area. There is also an outdoor riding arena where guests can practice the finer points of equitation, get to know their horse better; or try some barrel racing.
Fly Fishing
A wide range of excellent trout fishing opportunities await you in the East Kootenays. The streams, rivers, and lakes that we visit offer rainbow, brook, cutthroat, and bull trout. Some areas fished are 'catch and release' only. Many of our guests choose to try some fishing during their visit. Walk and wade trips are our specialty.
You can troll or spin cast, but our fishing experience is predominantly fly fishing on the Skookumchuck River, St Mary's River and the Bull River, with some spring fishing on several lakes in the area. See our special rates for fishing.
Birdwatching / Wildlife Viewing
The Rocky Mountain trench is a broad river valley containing the Kootenay and Columbia rivers, as well as several long, narrow lakes. The climate is mild and dry. Snow accumulations are low and the summers are warm. This creates an area of prime winter habitat for ungulates and waterfowl using the Pacific flyway. Guests may stroll around our series of ponds and identify over 20 species of birds, while listening to a symphony of bird songs. Or explore the ranchyard and and pastures to see:
Meadowlarks / Robins / Elk / Deer / Coyote / Moose
Red-winged Blackbird / Bald Eagle / Ferrugious Owl / Curlews
Western Tanager / Lewis' Woodpecker / Bighorn Sheep / Wild Turkeys
