Activities:
Banff Park’s rugged alpine beauty, dramatic glaciers, lakes and rushing rivers make it Canada’s top attraction. Banff boasts first-class amenities, the best powder skiing in the world, and guided tours and excursions for every taste. Banff townsite is a splendid counterpoint to the surrounding wilderness, with historic sites, fine restaurants, incredible shopping and a lively nightlife scene. Winter Activities When skiers arrive at the top of our mountains they are awestruck by the grandeur of the unspoiled wilderness that surrounds them. Banff/Lake Louise offers some of the finest skiing in the world. Three world-class ski resorts, all within easy access of the towns and available on one tri-area lift ticket, offer 7,558 acres of terrain suited to all skill levels, everything from groomed runs to massive bowls of powder. The main resorts are Banff Norquay, Sunshine, and Lake Louise. The ski areas operate generally from early November to mid May. There are also over 80km of cross-country trails around the Banff townsite alone. Canmore and Kananaskis Park also offer tremendous backcountry and track-set ski terrain for all levels. The vast network of track-set and untracked trails, and telemark slopes throughout Banff National Park calls nordic skiers of all abilities. In winter, participate in canyon ice walks, take a horse-drawn sleigh ride, or fly across the snow in a dog sled. Banff and Lake Louise are most tranquil in the in-between seasons of spring and late fall. Most museums and cultural attractions remain open during these shoulder seasons. DOWNHILL SKIING & SNOWBOARDING Lake Louise - For scenic grandeur, imaginative terrain design, and sheer size, the Lake Louise Ski Area ranks with the finest resorts in the world. This terrain, spread over four separate mountain faces, is interconnected by a lift and trail system that is comparable to the European "ski circuit" concept. Ski Banff @ Norquay - The area's oldest resort, Mount Norquay has been totally re-designed and expanded to world-class standards. You'll enjoy all the convenience of a comprehensive visitor services complex and a host of ski-season events. Sunshine Village - This alpine resort receives more than 30 feet of 100% natural snow every year and has one of North America's longest ski seasons (mid-November to mid-May). Sunshine Village offers some of the best wide-open above-tree-line skiing and boasts Banff’s only on-hill ski in/ski out hotel. CROSS COUNTRY SKIING The Banff National Park and the surrounding areas offer a vast network of cross-country skiing trails. Try the smooth tracks of the nearby Canmore Nordic Centre, or gentle touring trails throughout the park. Advanced skiers can enjoy high-alpine glacier traverse that rival the "haute-routes" of the Alps. Guided cross-country ski tours are available. HELI-SKIING / TELEMARKING For those wanting to getaway even further, helicopters are available to deliver you to the top of remote mountains and pick you up at the bottom after an exhilarating run down through untouched powder. WINTER ON FOOT Not comfortable skiing? No problem, a variety of other winter activities for all levels are accessible. SNOWSHOEING Join a guided tour for an outdoor experience following the tracks of wolves and wolverines, learning how owls hunt, and hearing how life adapts to the cold. SNOCOACH TOURS Tour onto the icy slopes of the Athabasca Glacier located at the Columbia Icefields. You will travel in a specially designed "snocoach" to the middle of the glacier, a five km round trip journey. Your driver will point out interesting geological features as you travel in safety and comfort. At the icefall below the glacier headwall, you will have the option of stepping out onto ice formed from snow falling as long as 400 years ago. CANYON ICE WALKS Join a guided ice walk into Johnston or Grotto Canyon for a glimpse into a frozen world of waterfalls and pillars of blue ice suspended in time. Often ice-climbers can be seen scaling the canyons massive ice walls. Tours include transportation, ice-cleats and an experienced guide. ICECLIMING / MOUNTANEERING Mountaineering sports are available year-around. In the winter season take advantage of ice-climbing, avalanche awareness and mountaineering instructions. SNOWMOBILING Near Banff is also terrific snowmobile terrain. Equipment rental and guided tours are offered through a number of outfitters in the area DOGSLEDDING / SLEIGH RIDES One of the warmest and most comfortable ways to enjoy and photograph the Canadian Rocky Mountains in winter. Imagine being whisked through the forest on a sled pulled by a lively team of huskies. If horses are more to your liking sleigh rides are also available. Summer Activities Banff offers a variety of easily accessible sightseeing and strenuous adventures. In summer, walk along the parks' many nature trails, hike into the backcountry or climb peaks made famous by early tourist/explorers who helped fill in the map of the Rockies a century ago. There's always a good chance that you'll see wildlife: ambling bighorn sheep, mountain goats, elk with huge shovel antlers, and mama bears with cubs--all guaranteed to halt traffic and set cameras clicking. Opportunities are endless and you will find you’ll have to come again and again to explore all the peaks, valleys, rivers, waterfalls, lakes, glaciers, flowers and wildlife. SIGHTSEEING TOURS & GONDOLA Summer or winter, fly over magnificent mountain landscapes on a helicopter or airplane sightseeing tour of Banff National Park. Enjoy viewing the endless valleys and snow-covered peaks of Mount Rundle, Mount Assiniboine or the highest peaks of the Canadian Rockies along the Continental Divide. Enjoy panoramic views, short hiking trails, interpretive exhibits and restaurants while appreciating the breathtaking scenery from the sightseeing gondolas in Banff (open year round). HORSEBACK RIDING/CARRIAGE RIDES Go Western! Experience the real west, for an hour or a day. See wildlife in the splendid scenery of Banff's backcountry, enjoy fishing, or delight in sensational photography. Horse-drawn carriage rides are available for tours around the Banff townsite. LAKE & RIVER FUN Enjoy spectacular Rocky Mountain scenery from a canoe. Rentals are available on the Bow River in Banff, at Lake Louise and at Moraine Lake. From float trips down the Bow River to the white water rapids of the Kicking Horse, Kananaskis or Kootenay Rivers. Find the one that's right for you! The famed Bow River (open year round) and numerous lakes and streams in and around Banff National Park are home to an abundance of fish species that attract Fly and Spin fisherman from all over the world. MOUNTAIN FUN Hiking is one of the best ways to really get to know the national parks. Explore them on foot! Over 1,000 kilometres of hiking trails, rated from novice to expert, await you in the park. Guided interpretive and caving tours are available for all ability levels. You can also choose to experience the remote backcountry via helicopter! For those seeking additional challenge, training programs are offered for beginners, intermediates and experts in the disciplines of rock and ice climbing, mountaineering, outdoor leadership, avalanche awareness and ski mountaineering. HOT SPRINGS & SPA Water temperature at the hot springs averages 104 degrees (40 degrees Celsius). For even greater relaxation, try out the spa. GOLF Teeing-off amongst the backdrop of dramatic mountain ranges, with local wildlife as your gallery, is an unequalled golfing experience. The area offers 9 & 18 hole world-class golf courses. BIKING Bike rentals and guides are available in abundance for leisurely strolls as well as excellent mountain biking in Banff’s rugged terrain.
