Downtown Winter Park for Off-Slope & Evening Adventures

For most visitors to Winter Park, the primary attraction is winter sports: alpine skiing, nordic skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing and more. But after a full day on the slopes or even a day off the slopes, there is plenty of opportunity for fun and relaxation in downtown Winter Park and Fraser.

For old-fashioned winter fun without strapping on skis, try a horse-drawn sleigh ride through the woods. Riders snuggle under a blanket while listening to the clopping of hooves and the jingle of bona fide sleigh bells. Local outfitters also offer a selection of winter trail rides for all ages.

To test balance and gliding skills, ice-skating at either Cooper Creek Square or the skating pond near the Fraser Valley Shopping Center guarantees a good workout and rosy cheeks. The Fraser Tubing Hill is a perennial favorite. With a smooth, slippery hillside for achieving top speeds, toe-curling thrills and dramatic spills are inevitable. A mini J-bar pulls tube riders back up the slope. With its nighttime lighting, the giggles and shrieks continue late into the evening.

When it’s time to duck inside, there are plenty of places and options for warming up. Shops at the base of the slopes and in Winter Park and Fraser offer clothing, original art, jewelry, books, sporting goods, t-shirts, chocolates, eclectic gifts, western-style furniture and more. For some pampering or self-indulgence, day spas offer a variety of personal services while massage therapists and yoga classes are easy to find. The chronically energetic can join an aerobics class or visit a fitness center with cardiac training equipment, indoor swimming pool and weights.

Dining, munching, chowing, grazing, eating and nibbling are essential elements on the vacation landscape—for everyone. In Winter Park, national chains are a scarce commodity in a town that is bursting with locally owned and operated restaurants and night spots that specialize in diverse and imaginative menus.

Breakfasts may include beignets, a deep-fried, sugary delight from New Orleans, huevos rancheros, or a fluffy stack of pancakes in the tiny Base Camp Bakery. Espresso and homemade biscotti are the specialty at one of the local coffee bars any time of day. Lunches run the gamut from oversized cheeseburgers at the Crooked Creek Saloon to authentic German spaetzle at Gasthaus Eichler.

For dinner, diners can opt for Southwestern (The Shed), Cajun (Fontenot’s), American (Wildcreek or the Divide Grill), Italian (Hernando’s), Asian (Pepe Osaka’s), barbecue and blues (Smokin’ Moe’s), Chinese (New Hong Kong) or eclectic cutting-edge cuisine and live jazz (Marvin’s Hideaway)—all along a one-mile stretch of downtown Winter Park. From a casual pizza joint to a crowded cantina atmosphere to upscale Continental dining, the choices are diverse and compelling.

Lively nightlife for the “energizer bunnies” can be found throughout town from The Pub at the north side of town to the Higher Grounds Café & Martini Lounge at the south end of town without skipping other local hangouts such as Bucket’s and Deno’s Mountain Bistro.

History buffs can visit the valley’s oldest home and original stage stop at the Cozens Ranch Museum. The Fraser Valley Visitor’s Center has a display of dramatic, turn-of-the-century photos featuring gigantic snowstorms and the characters that populated the Fraser Valley during the heyday of the railroad and ranching eras.
