TRAIL DESCRIPTIONS BIKING Stagecoach State Park (Elk Run Trail)** Difficulty rating: Easy Distance: 10.2 miles Terrain: Weedy two-track and gravel road Elevation gain: 0', but some rolling hills Location: Stagecoach State Park, approximately 16 miles from Steamboat Springs off Highway 131 and RCR 14 Brief description: The Elk Run Trail follows the south reservoir shoreline, crosses a dam and heads up a short, tree-covered hill on the south side of the reservoir before finishing at the fishing access on the west side of the reservoir. Return by the same trail.
Spring Creek** Difficulty rating: Moderate Distance: Approximately 10 miles Terrain: Gravel road, loose single track Elevation gain: 1,600' Location: Amethyst Drive to Maple Street, which becomes Spring Creek Road Brief description: Spring Creek trail begins as a dirt road that narrows as it begins to climb and becomes a switchbacking single-track up Spring Creek Canyon that crosses the creek several times. After about 5 miles, the trail joins Buffalo Pass Road where riders can turn around and return by their initial route.
Emerald Mountain** Difficulty Rating: Difficult Distance: Approximately 5 miles Terrain: Dirt road with optional singletrack loops Elevation gain: 1,088' Location: Trailhead is just northwest of downtown Steamboat Springs on Routt Street Brief description: The Emerald Mountain trail is an old, dirt mining road with several singletrack loops branching off of it. While the trail climbs steeply, it also offers great views of Steamboat Springs and the Yampa Valley. After about 2 miles of climbing, riders will reach the quarry and its stunning overlook. The last .6 miles to the top of the mountain take riders up a very steep ascent through a forested area. From the top of Emerald, riders can enjoy the best panoramas, including views of the Flat Tops Wilderness Area. Return by the same route and explore some of the marked side loops.
Mt. Werner (Steamboat Ski Area) Difficulty: Easy, Moderate and Difficult Distance: Varies. Over 50 miles available. Longest single trail is 6 miles Terrain: Single and double tracks, and dirt roads Elevation gain: Varies. Gain to top of the gondola is 2,180 feet. Gain from top of gondola to top of Storm Peak is 1,292'. Total elevation gain is 3,472' Location: Just northeast of downtown Steamboat Springs off Mt. Werner Circle. Brief description: Mt. Werner (the Steamboat Ski Area) features over 50 miles of trails that can be accessed from the base area or the gondola, which operates from early June through mid-September (schedule may vary) and can carry bikes. Gondola access allows riders to skip the climb and head straight for the downhill, or start the climb to the top of Storm Peak half way up the mountain.
Trails range from beginner to advanced. Trail maps and bike rentals are available at the ski area. Helmets are required on all of Mount Werner's mountain bike trails.
