General Info About Loveland Ski Area

Opening Day

Loveland Ski Area has earned a reputation of being the first of Colorado’s ski areas to open for the season, and sometimes the first in the country.  Cooler temperatures and higher altitude combined with a state of the art snowmaking system make mid-October the mark for ski season to begin. With opening day festivities and smiles on the faces of all those trading in mountain bikes, kayaks and golf clubs for skis and snowboards, the start of ski season is always a festive occasion at Loveland.

Terrain Park Explosion

Loveland Ski Area has recognized and embraced the freeskiing and riding movement in snowsports.  Last season Loveland was home to two terrain parks, Tempest and Drifter, and a half-pipe on the run Roulette.  The huge success and praise garnered by the terrain parks have Loveland trying something new for the 2002-03 season.  This season Loveland will install a third terrain park in place of the half-pipe.  “We have prime real estate to put in some new jumps and grow our terrain park program”, explains Mark Abrahamson, Trail Maintenance Manager.  The new terrain park is located below Chair 6 offering increased exposure for photo shoots, competitions, and events.  Offering three terrain parks spread across Loveland’s trail system means skiers and riders will never have far to travel to find new hits, obstacles and challenges.  After soliciting feedback from pro skiers and riders, Loveland has designed terrain park layouts which feature the latest and most challenging features for guests to test their skills on.

  SUN/UV

  • Ultraviolet rays are more powerful at higher elevations. since we are about 2 miles above sea level you will need goggles and sunglasses that have UV protection. Also, regardless of your skin color or complexion, everyone needs to wear sunscreen even on overcast days when ultraviolet rays still penetrate cloud cover. For more info click  Go Sun Smart

  ALTITUDE ILLNESS

  • There is no full proof method for avoiding altitude sickness, but drinking extra water and avoiding salty foods the week before you arrive seems to be the most helpful.

  NEVER EVERS

  • If you have never skied /snowboarded before let us teach you how to stop and turn so you can avoid obstacles and other people on the mountain. it is your responsibility to keep those around you safe.

  RENTAL SHOPS

  • We have two rental shops (one at each base area) that rent skis, snowboards, parabolic skis and Tele.

    MOUNTAIN DRIVING

  • Colorado law requires you to buckle up and that all windows be completely snow/ice free so that full vision is possible. More distance between you and the vehicle in front of you is required when driving on snowy/icy roads. If your vehicle is not equipped with anti-lock brakes, you do not want to lock up your breaks - pump them. Avoid breaking on curves and remember 4 wheel drive vehicles should follow all of these same basic rules.

The Snow At Loveland, Colorado

For most Colorado resorts, any season in which one receives over 33 feet of snowfall would be a record-breaker.  At Loveland, it’s just another year.  Perched high atop the Continental Divide, Loveland has averaged well over 400 inches of snow annually over the past 20 years.  Consider the record setting season of 1995-96 where 571 ½ inches was not only a Loveland best, but also tops in the state.  “Being situated right on the Divide allows us to catch typical storms from the west as well as up –slope conditions that tend to favor the Front Range,” explains Kevin Wright, marketing director at Loveland.  The abundant natural snow fall coupled with 160 acres of snowmaking coverage allows Loveland to be one of the first ski areas in the country to open, in mid-October, and one of the last to close, in mid-May.

With this wealth of snow, Loveland has always had the confidence to offer an unconditional ‘snow guarantee’.  Anyone not satisfied with snow conditions may simply return a lift ticket by 10:00 a.m. for a rain-check or a full refund.  “This sport is about fun and we want our guests to enjoy themselves,” says Wright, “if a guest isn’t happy with our product for any reason we are happy to honor or 'Snow Guarantee'," he continues.
