Vancouver – Members of the international panel that will evaluate entries to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Emblem Design Competition were named today.
"We have a stellar list of judges with excellent experience in the areas of art, design and branding," said John Furlong, chief executive officer of the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC). "This panel will offer diverse views and cultural perspectives that will help us select the emblem for the 2010 Winter Games."
The panel is made up of Canadian and international representatives. Dave Cobb, VANOC's senior vice president of revenue, marketing and communications, will act as an observer during the evaluation session.
"This emblem competition marks the beginning of the creative process," said Dave Cobb, "that will involve hundreds of people collaborating on a wide range of design projects resulting in the entire look of the 2010 Winter Games."

· Brad Copeland, President and founder of Iconologic, an Atlanta-based brand design firm specializing in identity, communications design, interactive media and advertising for corporate and Olympic clients. (Atlanta, USA)
· Scott Givens, Vice President of Entertainment for Disney Entertainment Productions. Led creative and ceremonies teams for the 2002 Salt Lake Winter Games. (Los Angeles, USA)
· Dorothy Grant, Designer and traditional Haida artist. (Vancouver)

· Theodora Mantzaris-Kindel, Manager of the Image & Identity department at the Organising Committee for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games (Athens, Greece)
· Steve Mykolyn, Creative Director of design and interactive at Taxi Advertising and Design. (Toronto)
· Wei Yew – Designer and author of The Olympic Image – The First 100 years. (Edmonton)
"Since we announced the competition three months ago, we've had strong interest from across the country," added Furlong. "We are looking forward to submissions that will capture the essence of the Olympic movement and what the Vancouver 2010 Games will mean for Canada and the world."
The Vancouver 2010 Olympic Emblem Design Competition is open to Canadian designers, creative professionals and design students. The deadline for submissions is September 15, 2004.
The winning emblem design will earn a prize of $25,000 and two tickets to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony. VANOC plans to unveil the new logo in early 2005. Competition details can be found at www.vancouver2010.com/design.

Biographies of Design Panel Experts
Dr. Ron Burnett
Dr. Ron Burnett is President, Emily Carr Institute of Art + Design, member of the Board of Governors of NewMedia BC, BCNet and former Board member of the New Media Innovation Centre. Dr. Burnett was the Director of the Graduate Program in Communications at McGill University before coming to Emily Carr, is the author of the newly published How Images Think (MIT Press, 2004), a recipient of the Queen's Jubilee Medal, Chair of the Association of Canadian Art and Design Institutes and Colleges, member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Art, Photographer and author of over one hundred and fifty published articles in the fields of Art, Design, Media, Communications, New Media and Cultural Studies.
Brad Copeland
Brad Copeland is President and founder of Iconologic, an Atlanta-based brand design firm specializing in identity, communications design, interactive media and advertising for corporate and Olympic clients. He created Atlanta's logo for its bid for the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games and Atlanta's winning 630-page bid book package, and was Design Director for the Atlanta Games, directing the design and application of the "Look of the Games" throughout the city and its venues. In 1997, he was hired by the IOC to direct the development of the Look of the Games for Nagano 1998, Sydney 2000, and Salt Lake 2002, and he is currently overseeing the Look programs in Athens, Torino and Beijing. Copeland has judged all three previous Olympic emblem competitions — as well as the Athens and Torino mascot competitions.
Scott Givens
As Vice President of Entertainment for Disney Entertainment Productions, Scott Givens provides strategic, creative and operational leadership for the company's 2,700-person West Coast Entertainment team. His group is responsible for over 1,500 weekly performances in Disneyland and Disney's California Adventure, and 3,000 special events a year for the Walt Disney Company. Before coming to the Walt Disney Company, Givens led the creative agency and ceremonies teams for the Salt Lake City 2002 Olympic Winter Games. Today, Scott continues consulting to the IOC, including assignments on the image/ceremonies for Athens, Torino and Beijing. Scott is also founder of Stadium Stunts, a production company focusing on large-scale audience stunts and human formations. His credits span over 200 spectaculars including the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Ceremonies, numerous Super Bowl Games and NBA All-Star Basketball Games.
Dorothy Grant
Dorothy is a designer and traditional Haida artist whose garments, ceremonial button blankets, and spruce root hats are treasured by Canadians as expressions of living culture. Her work is featured in collections around the world – including the National Gallery of Canada, the Canadian Museum of Civilization, the University of British Columbia Museum of Anthropology and the Seattle Art Museum. Grant has also successfully ventured into a signature ready-to-wear fashion and retail business, pioneering "wearable art" influenced by traditional and ceremonial Haida art. The Dorothy Grant accessory line of handbags has been included in the new Smithsonian American Indian Museum shops.
Dorothy Grant was born in Hydaburg, Alaska and is a Haida of the Raven clan from the Brown Bear house of Howkan. Dorothy apprenticed with Haida Elder Florence Edenshaw-Davidson, and also learned design from Haida master artist Robert Davidson. Also a graduate of Vancouver's Helen Lefeaux School of Fashion Design, Grant's extensive and diverse artistic training helped develop her unique ability to bring both traditional and contemporary elements to her art and design.
Rod Harris
Kimberley, BC-born Rod Harris is President and CEO of Tourism British Columbia, where he leads the global marketing of Super, Natural British Columbia. Under his direction, Tourism BC has won Gold Medals from the Canadian Marketing Association (2001), the Pacific Asia Travel Association (2000), and the Canadian Direct Marketing Association (1998), and was named BC's Marketer of the Year by the American Marketing Association (1999).
Prior to his appointment at Tourism British Columbia, Harris served as an executive in top Canadian marketing and advertising companies such as Maclaren Advertising and John Labatt Limited. He has also been a senior marketing manager responsible for leading international brands such as Colgate-Palmolive, Sara Lee, Sunlight, General Foods, and Cloverleaf. Harris has also proven himself as an entrepreneur, as President and majority shareholder of EDG Foods Ltd. – Canada's first commercial producer of dried fruit snacks.
Theodora Mantzaris-Kindel
Mantzaris-Kindel is the Manager of the Image & Identity department at the Athens 2004 Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (ATHOC). Prior to her appointment at ATHOC she worked in London for ten years, for multinational companies such as Addison, Landor and Wolff Olins, designing the strategy for the corporate identity of organizations such as Portugal Telecom, Airtel, AVE (Alta Velocidad Espana), Gas Natural, Bank of Cyprus and the British Tea Council.
She studied at Ravensbourne College and got a Master of Arts in Graphic Design and Art Direction from the Royal College of Art in London, under an Onassis Foundation Scholarship. She also has a Postgraduate degree in Marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing at Guildhall University, and has attended an Executive Course in Leadership at Harvard University.
Steve Mykolyn
Steve Mykolyn is Creative Director of design and interactive at Taxi Advertising and Design (2002 and 2003 Strategy Magazine "Agency of the Year"). Steve has produced work for some of the world's largest corporations, including BMW, IBM, Nike, DaimlerChrysler and Hudson's Bay Corporation, and has won over 100 international awards for his design and communications work. Steve has been involved with interactive design since 1995 and has created award-winning websites for Levi's, Sony, LCBO and PriceWaterhouseCoopers.
In 1992, he wrote and produced a book with photographer Russell Monk about Mexico's Day of the Dead celebration entitled El Dia La Noche Y Los Muertos, and followed this with a film about the festival where he acted as producer, director and writer. The award-winning documentary has been shown at festivals in Spain, Cuba, Germany and the United States and has been broadcast on the CBC and HBO. He also wrote and designed Amusing World Volume 2, "a guide to surreal estate for the first time buyer". Next up is Brand My Ass, a tell-all industry handbook.
Wei Yew
Wei Yew practiced graphic design in Singapore for many years before immigrating to Canada in and opening his own firm, Studio 3 Graphics, in 1979. Wei has extensive Olympic design experience. He was commissioned by former IOC President Samaranch to produce a centennial publication entitled The Olympic Image, he created logos for the Olympic Truce and for the Environmental Olympics, and Wei designed for the Calgary 1988 Olympic Arts Festival.
His works have won international design awards and have been published in various publications such as the prestigious magazine Communication Arts. Wei started his own publishing company, Quon Editions, which has produced best-selling design books such as Storks and Bonds, Noah's Art and Gotcha! The Art of the Billboard. He has served on the teaching staff at Grant MacEwan College and the eMedia Design School in Edmonton, and has adjudicated numerous design competitions, including the first-ever graphic design show in China.
